Definition
The Youth Development Leader (YDL) works closely with AJRP participants, providing daily mentorship and guidance to help them develop essential life skills, build positive relationships, and achieve personal and professional goals. The YDL facilitates skill-building activities, monitors progress, and offers support in goal-setting and overcoming challenges. They act as a role model, fostering an inclusive and safe environment while ensuring participants stay engaged and meet program expectations. Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills are essential for success in this role, as well as a passion for empowering youth and supporting their development.
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing a wide variety of unskilled recreation or parks related activities on a part-time basis; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Acts as a representative or attendant at various recreational facilities and programs such as shelter houses, sports complexes, community and senior recreation centers, and golf courses; coordinates use of recreational facility to prevent participants from interfering with one another;
Greets public at recreation center or special event site; answers inquiries about the recreational facility or program; directs participants, visitors, and callers to the appropriate location or staff member; informs participants and visitors of rules concerning dress, conduct, and equipment usage and enforces rules; ejects unruly participants or visitors as necessary;
Sets up or assists in setting up recreation equipment, apparatus, and displays such as volleyball standards and nets, basketball nets, art displays, golf carts, score boards, bleachers, show mobile, portable stage, sports and arts and craft merchandise, sound and miscellaneous stage equipment, and tables and chairs;
Distributes and collects recreation equipment and supplies;
Patrols recreational facility to detect theft, fire, vandalism, or destruction and reports damages to appropriate authority; inspects facility premises and equipment to identify maintenance and repair needs;
Opens and closes recreational facilities at designated times as required;
Assists in cleaning recreational facility and adjacent grounds; assists in performing routine maintenance as required;
Assists in scheduling athletic and artistic events and officials and notifying appropriate individuals;
May operate specialized mobile vending equipment to sell merchandise or products at recreation special events;
May operate photographic equipment in support of marketing and public information functions, specialized programs, or special events;
May transport recreation equipment, apparatus, displays, supplies, and employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
Some positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
