Huntington National Bank Middleware Operations Engineer in Columbus, Ohio

Position Summary:We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Middleware Operations Engineer to join our Enterprise Middleware Operations team. This team is responsible for managing and maintaining critical middleware infrastructure necessary for the support of development teams throughout the system development lifecycle. The successful candidate will support Enterprise Applications leveraging various technologies, including WebSphere, Tomcat, DataPower, MQ, OpenShift, image management, and vulnerability management. Automation knowledge is a must-have.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Middleware Management: Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of middleware technologies, including WebSphere, Tomcat, DataPower, and MQ.

  • OpenShift Administration: Manage and maintain OpenShift clusters, ensuring high availability, performance, and security.

  • Image Management: Develop and maintain container images, ensuring they are secure, up-to-date, and compliant with organizational standards.

  • Vulnerability Management: Identify, assess, and remediate vulnerabilities in middleware and container environments, ensuring compliance with security policies and regulations.

  • Automation: Design, implement, and maintain automation solutions to streamline middleware operations, improve efficiency, and reduce manual intervention.

  • Incident Management: Lead the resolution of complex technical issues, providing expert-level troubleshooting and support for middleware-related incidents.

  • On-Call Rotation: Participate in primary and secondary on-call rotations, providing 24/7 support for critical systems and ensuring timely resolution of incidents.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with development, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of middleware technologies.

  • Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for middleware configurations, procedures, and best practices.

  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Support and Maintenance: Support and maintain the Enterprise-Class Middleware and Container stack supporting a multitude of mission-critical systems.

  • Software Upgrades and Enhancements: Manage new capabilities, software upgrades/enhancements, and provide direct support and consultation for application onboarding and integration.

  • Proactive Monitoring: Ensure high availability and performance of Middleware and Container systems through proactive monitoring and maintenance.

  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously improve processes and procedures for Middleware operations.

  • Strategic Contribution: Understand and contribute to the development of overall IT strategies and be familiar with industry trends in technology and architecture.

  • Team Participation: Participate in team meetings, reviews, and project status reports.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or 10 years equivalent experience

  • 5 years of experience in middleware operations, with a focus on WebSphere, Tomcat, DataPower, and MQ.

  • 2 years of experience with Linux/Unix based systems

  • 2 years of experience supporting Container Environments

  • Previous Financial Services experience or knowledge is a plus

  • Microsoft Office experience

  • Experience working in a multi-platform environment

  • Previous experience administering DataPower preferred

  • Scripting Languages preferred: Bash, Python, Ansible, GO, PHP, Javascript, and working with YAML/JSON

  • Previous experience in designing and engineering environments in a 24x7 mission-critical environment

  • Experience with design principles of high availability solutions leveraging technologies such as local and geographic clustering, load balancing

  • Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes experience: Understanding Kubernetes daemon sets, troubleshooting POD startup failures, creating and editing Docker files, and pulling images from repositories

  • Previous experience supporting AWS preferred

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Strong understanding of security best practices and regulatory compliance in the financial industry

  • Exceptional verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and composed under stressful situations, especially during incident resolution
