Definition
The office of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Legal Investigator/Paralegal with at least one year of experience as a paralegal. This position is in our Claims Section and is primarily responsible for managing delinquent income tax cases.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-driven, reliable, and possess the ability to maintain confidentiality, to work with the public professionally, and to manage a busy caseload.
Skills and Experience
Degree or certification in paralegal studies preferred. One or more years of experience as a paralegal required. Knowledge of civil litigation concepts, practices and procedures. Knowledge of filing procedures and requirements of courts and agencies. Must be able to pass a background check and a drug screen.
Salary Range
$53,165 – $62,000 depending on experience.
About the Claims Section
Located at 77 N. Front Street, the Claims Section investigates pre-litigation tort claims against the City that exceed the sum of $2,500.00. These tort claims include personal injury and property damage claims. The Claims Section also manages the collection of delinquent debt owed to the City after City departments have exhausted remedies and prior to initiating litigation. If a matter cannot be resolved in the pre-litigation stage, then the Claims Section files suit.

A person who has been selected by an appointing authority in accordance with the Columbus City Charter, Section 148(1) is said to have received an unclassified appointment. Those individuals receiving unclassified appointments serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time. Under direction, is responsible for assisting the attorneys in the City Attorney’s Office by performing more difficult and complex investigative and research work; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
Reviews accounts referred for filing in the Franklin County Municipal Court and the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, prepares complaints and pleadings, obtains service, drafts motions and judgment entries, and obtains judgments and certificates of judgment to collect delinquent income taxes and other taxes owed to the City. Communicates with defendants via telephone and e-mail regarding assigned cases. Attends court as needed for hearings and for mediations. Participates in settlement negotiations when appropriate.
Maintains all physical and electronic records and files on assigned cases; processes and maintains records of incoming payments; and provides information to debtors regarding payment plans.
Provides general office support to attorneys and other staff members.
