Definition

The Community Engagement Administrator for City Council is responsible for leading the team that conceptualizes, develops and facilitates the implementation of projects and initiatives of City Council related to external affairs and community relations while focusing on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion to improve the quality of life for all of Columbus’s residents. This position requires close coordination and communication with the Chief of Staff and Council team, City Departments, and community stakeholders. In addition, this individual is required to work successfully with representatives from various communities, organizations, constituencies, causes, and neighborhoods, with respect to the diverse populations and cultures, to build and foster strong relationships with City Council and city departments. This position strives to act as a bridge between communities and city officials by helping to identify and understand the needs and concerns of the community by proactively engaging with residents on issues impacting them.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work is required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, and occasionally during the evening; although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Preferred Experience

  1. 3-5 years of experience in community outreach and engagement work.

  2. Working relationships and knowledge of the local community.

A person who has been selected by an appointing authority in accordance with the Columbus City Charter, Section 148(1) is said to have received an unclassified appointment. Those individuals receiving unclassified appointments serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time. Under general direction, is responsible for directing and coordinating activities relating to policy, initiatives, and other matters requiring legislative attention or action; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

Essential Functions

40% Leadership, Strategy, and Innovation

• Develops and implements a strategic outreach and engagement plan for City Council;

• Partners with community and neighborhood organizations, key constituency groups, issue advocates, and external entities to develop and implement programs, events, and initiatives that advance the agenda of City Council;

• Works with City Council and City departments to develop plans that promote new and ongoing initiatives in their respective areas;

• Develops and promotes opportunities to meaningfully engage with the community;

• Advance the Council’s plans for internal and external equity-related initiatives; and

• Personally manage relationships with key leaders and partner entities, representing City Council at community meetings, events, workshops, townhalls and presentations.

40% Team Management and Operations

• Manage the community engagement department, which currently includes five staff in addition to the Administrator;

• Supervise and coach staff;

• Design and implement Council-wide systems for events, engagement, constituent casework, etc.;

• Collaborates and coordinates with other departments as needed; and

• Responds to the needs and concerns of issues directly affecting or voiced by constituents.

20% Other duties as assigned
