Position: CNC Machinist – Columbia Falls

Division: Operations

Department: Fabrication

Schedule: Full-Time, M - Th, SWING SHIFT (3 pm - 1:30 am)

Reports To: Fabrication Manager

The CNC Machinist is responsible for programing, operating, and coordinating completion of daily, weekly, and monthly production tasks for producing strategic or tactical vehicles in a manufacturing shop environment, while ensuring project deadlines are met. This position also ensures that machining processes are carried out following customer specifications and organizational goals and that improvements are made, metrics are tracked, and production deadlines are met with a result of the highest quality product delivered by the expected date.

Essential Functions / Responsibility:

  • Analyze specifications, 3D models, and drawings to determine machining process, tool holding, cutting tool, and work holding requirements.

  • Use knowledge of material properties to help guide tooling selection and work holding decisions.

  • Read, understand, and apply Engineer CAD drawings to production requirements.

  • Effectively set up and program parts to maximize output efficiency and quality.

  • Utilize skills to program parts in 3D CAM software and run CNC machines.

  • Measure finished parts to ensure product meets project dimensional and tolerance requirements.

  • Work independently, inspect work, and ensure it meets Nomad quality standards.

  • Work with a Continuous Improvement mindset:

  • Reduce waste and support key company objectives at the Team level.

  • Assist Fabrication Manager, Team Leads and ISG personnel in developing, implementing, and maintaining production standards, SOP’s, quality, and safety.

  • Learn and operate other CNC tooling in the shop (Brake, Sheet Laser, Tube Laser,).

  • Maintain a clean, efficient, and safe work environment.

  • Be responsible for 5S and clear connection to IC for kitting and parts queue.

  • Act with good judgment in a fast-paced environment.

  • Provide sounds solutions and innovative ideas to maintain a competitive advantage and a positive impact on the bottom line.

  • Report daily to Fabrication Manager.

  • Ensure Nomad’s policies and procedures are adhered to and followed.

  • Work overtime as required to meet critical deadlines.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Have strong computer skills and knowledge of E2, Excel, Word, etc.

  • Production and Processing – raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of our products.

  • Mechanical – machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Engineering and Technology – practical application of engineering. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and design.

  • Safety and Security – relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote a safe and working environment 100% of the time.

    Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to finger, handle, feel, reach, or operate objects, tools, or controls.

  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and is occasionally required to sit.

  • At times, the employee will be required to work at heights up to 20 feet.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Anything heavier than 50 pounds will require two people to lift / carry.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish individual colors.

    Working Environment:

  • The work environment is a partially environmentally controlled indoor environment. Depending upon the time of year, temperatures can fluctuate between 60F and 100F but is typically around 70F. There are times when working outside will be required.

  • The employee must have the ability to work from heights at the ground floor up to 20 feet from the ground on ladders or platforms of varying sizes.

  • The employee may be subjected to noise levels, ranging from low volume to loud and will be required to wear provided safety hearing devices from time to time, which will be provided.

  • The employee will be exposed to a variety of household/commercial chemicals that will require the employee to follow company rules/regulations outlined by that SDS.

  • All Team Members must wear provided OSHA approved eye protection at all times in manufacturing areas. The employee will be required to wear provided safety eyewear throughout the performance of their duties.

    Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED. Additional education highly preferred.

  • Manual machine tool experience (Lathe, Mill, Saw, etc.)

  • 2-5+ years of experience setting up and operating CNC machine tools

  • 2+ years of experience CAM Programming for Mill

  • Strong working knowledge of cutting tool selection, work-holding, and fixture design

  • Production literacy - knowledge of production processes, raw materials, and shop tools

  • Must have good communication, organizational, and time management skills.
