Hiring Pay Rate
The annual base salary shall be established pursuant to the Teacher Salary Schedule, and based upon appropriate education and experience. The annual base salary shall be based upon the standard number of working days in the academic year (as per established School Calendar; currently 195 days, August to June). GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position reports to the Director of Outreach Programs and is responsible for providing Colorado Academic standards and benchmarks in establishing instructional goals to preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, and transition-aged students who are blind, low vision, and who may have other disabilities. The services are provided through contracts between the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) and school districts and Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) in the state of Colorado. Provides assessments that measure whether students meet standards.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs work associated with standards-based student instruction: prepares lesson plans, adapts instructional materials, develops input for and presents instructional/learning activities based upon the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Maintains a positive learning environment utilizing appropriate behavior management, keeps students on task and engaged in learning.
Works as part of an education / assessment team responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating individual objectives for assigned students.
Coordinates effectively with other service staff in providing student instruction, supporting school reform efforts, strategic planning, and positively contributing to co-curricular activities.
Coordinates the receipt of referrals and leads discussions with other TVIs regarding caseload allocations.
Tracks the service times, delivery, and notes per IEP and contract with districts.
Provides the contracted districts/BOCES/schools with student notes and progress reports during the contract length.
Submits required paperwork within established guidelines.
Tracks and monitors data required by the Colorado Instructional Materials Center (CIMC).
Participates in assessments as requested by districts.
Provides parent consultation; participates in selected parent-focused activities.
Develops and coordinates professional development activities for educational staff in Colorado.
Participates in professional development activities and training/workshops as appropriate.
Develops and coordinates events specific to Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) and parent training.
Positively serves as a team member of Outreach Programs and of the CSDB as a whole; and participates in regular team/departmental/school meetings as required.
Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education or closely related field from an accredited college or university, with specialization in Education of the Visually Impaired.
Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist: Visually Impaired, or comparable endorsement.
Preferred Qualification: dual certification / licensure in Orientation and Mobility.
5+ years’ experience as an itinerant teacher working with children who are blind, low vision and/or multiple disabilities.
Ability to demonstrate competency in Braille by the end of the first instructional year, as evidenced by possession of a CDE Certificate of Braille Competency.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices associated with children who are blind, low vision to a variety of settings.
Knowledge of ECC for students who are blind, low vision, including those with multiple disabilities.
Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to e-mail, internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB.
Knowledge of and ability to effectively adapt and apply teaching skills, classroom management and lesson preparation, which may include but is not limited to onsite classroom, telepresence, multiple distance education technologies and delivery modes; ability to effectively implement technology necessary to model, teach, and assist students relative to classroom instruction and activities.
Skills in the areas of task analysis, progress monitoring, daily living skills, assessment, behavior management, organization / planning, curriculum development, current technology practices relative to students who have vision loss, parent relations and teamwork.
Knowledge and understanding of services for students with vision loss in educational settings.
Ability to effectively implement current technologies utilized by students who are blind, low vision.
Ability to resolve issues related to parent support and service delivery decisions.
Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team setting.
Strong, positive interpersonal skills and leadership skills.
Ability and willingness to travel (frequently) throughout the state of Colorado.
Proficiency or commitment to work toward proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the required skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and per school policies.
Ability to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills with other CSDB staff and invested partners, and the ability to adhere to CSDB’s Core Values
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Outreach Programs
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Full-Time; scheduled to work 195 days (0.75 FTE); 40 hours/week during the academic year (August through June).
The base salary shall be established pursuant to the Teacher Salary Schedule and based upon appropriate education and experience.
Employment is at will, with no actual, expressed, or implied contract.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Generally speaking, the work is performed in a typical school environment and involves mostly sedentary to light physical activity, typically requiring exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Typically, workers are required to climb stairs, bend, reach, and handle objects, and use fingers to operate computer and/or typewriter keyboard. Work requires expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information. Work requires the ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate data/ information; ability to instruct/train others; and ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills/ behaviors.
In addition, work at the elementary school level involves heavy physical activity, requiring exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and routinely requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Work at the middle school / high school level involves very heavy physical activity, requiring exertion in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally. Working with Special Needs students will require exertion of force frequently. Travel according to contract needs is required within the state of Colorado.
