Hiring Range: $41.000 - $49.159

(commensurate with qualifications)

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Thursday, 7:00am – 5:30pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Performs advanced-level drafting and complex engineering support for transportation and drainage construction projects using Autodesk Civil 3D. Computes and plots field survey notes, plots cross sections, and prepares construction plans. Reproduces and distributes engineering drawings and correspondence. Serves as a subject matter expert; provides mentoring, training, and troubleshooting to other AutoCAD users.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced-level drafting using AutoCAD Civil 3D for engineering design projects; computes and plots field survey notes, plots cross sections, and prepares construction plans.

  • Performs technical calculations and research of documents or plans.

  • Provides complex engineering support. Coordinates drafting needs with managers, project engineers, and programs. Identifies potential engineering problems and recommends solutions to project engineers, managers, and leadership.

  • Prepares various drawings (plan, elevation, profile views, details, and notes) for construction projects; maintains a professional drawing style, content, and appearance.

  • Develops, updates, and maintains a consistent set of AutoCAD drawing standards, including a layer naming convention, line types, weights, and colors, as well as drawing symbology for north arrows, fire hydrants, manholes, numbering, and fonts.

  • Processes redlined construction drawings for as-built conditions and various other duties as assigned.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert; provides mentoring, training, and troubleshooting for other AutoCAD users.

  • Responsible for or assists with maintaining, linking, and modifying geographic information system (GIS) databases.

  • Assists with the interpretation and application of specifications and criteria into construction plans.

  • Organizes documents and backup materials for a variety of design projects, studies, reports, and requests for information. Assists with the acquisition of information and documents from, and in coordination with, outside entities for design purposes.

  • Supports or supplements IT efforts for the department, such as printer and plotter operational maintenance; serves as liaison to County IT.

  • Assist management in maintaining appropriate staffing levels to support dynamic workloads.

  • Supports staff training and technical development; may assist leadership in providing input for performance evaluations.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised:This classification does not have supervisory authority; however, may be required to provide expertise or limited guidance or direction to employees, such as overseeing work quality, training, and guidance. Typically serves as a subject matter expert on the scope of functional area.

Supervision Received:Receives general supervision. This classification typically performs job duties by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor may be expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D required.

  • Knowledge of roadway and drainage construction, methods, materials, and techniques preferred.

  • Knowledge of GIS.

  • Ability to interpret roadway and drainage construction plans and specifications and familiarity with engineering standards and department procedures.

  • Ability to work independently, analyze, and use sound judgment in completing assignments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.

  • Ability to perform quality control reviews on assignments and work of others.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.

  • Eight years of work experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting software.

  • Associate’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for two years of the required experience.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Courses in trigonometry and geometry.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office and remote work environment dependent upon Department discretion and business needs; some travel required to perform work in the field potentially in adverse weather conditions.
