Department Summary:

MITRE’s Systems Security Engineering (SSE) Department has a new opportunity for a subject matter expert to join an innovative team of engineers focused on ensuring trustworthy resilient and secure solutions for sponsor or customer needs and developing security capabilities for a safer world. The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced teaming environment and working with cutting-edge technology and contribute to advancing security concepts. We are seeking a self-starter to lead efforts building security into large engineering projects and acquisition efforts. The candidate for this position will work a wide variety of challenging systems and projects focused on enabling resiliency, security, and cybersecurity capabilities in direct support of programs. The candidate will have opportunities to advance the science and practice of systems security engineering.

To succeed in this position, you must be a subject matter expert in a broad range of security topics ranging from strategy and planning, governance and management, to protection, detection, mitigation, and cyber operations. You will need excellent verbal and written communication skills to present your findings, recommendations and innovative ideas to the Senior Government Sponsors.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Analyze cyber risk postures of space mission systems and engineer mitigating defensive cyber capabilities and approaches

  • Analyze space enterprise cyber C2 and situational awareness and advise stakeholders towards improved capabilities

  • Analyze missions and systems for potential loss conditions and unacceptable loss consequences and propose mitigation approaches

  • Provide recommendations on ensuring systems are specified, designed, developed, implemented, integrated, and sustained to meet security, resiliency, safety, and assurance needs, goals, and objectives

  • Research and develop unique, cutting-edge technical capabilities and processes for understanding, assessing, and analyzing system and technology resilience and security

  • Lead systems security analysis and assessments, including identifying risk criticalities and handling options, to inform decision making

  • Lead the development of systems security and cybersecurity strategy development, system testing and evaluation, and verification and validation efforts

  • Analyze system requirements, software, hardware, supply chain, and integration approaches using analysis tools to identify vulnerabilities and system architecture, design, and implementation flaws

  • Develop system security engineering attributes within complex model-based system engineering products in direct support of programs

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • At least 5 years of applied SSE experience, including 3 years of leadership experience

  • Familiarity conducting and leading capability assessments utilizing the military utilization assessment methodology

  • Experience working in and briefing senior leaders at DoD major commands

  • Employing excellent writing and communication skills to develop / deliver technical explanations and presentations

  • Success working in a highly collaborative environment with peers and senior government officials

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive space mission domain knowledge

  • Advanced degree in Systems Engineering, EE, Mathematics, Physics, or other engineering or science discipline

  • Familiarity with NIST SP 800-160 systems security engineering considerations for systems engineering

  • Familiarity with defensive cyberspace operations

  • Familiarity with space operations

  • Familiarity with Model Based System Engineering tools

  • Knowledge of reliability and/or safety engineering methods

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$168,500 - $210,500 - $252,500 Annual
