The Veterinary Anesthesia Technician III-Scheduling Coordinator, in collaboration with and under the direction of the Anesthesia Technician IV-Supervisor, assists and instructs in the provision of clinical support to anesthesiologists in the delivery and instruction of primary patient care and anesthesia services. Assumes accountability for the ongoing floor operations of the Small Animal Anesthesia service, onboarding and training of new hire technicians, cross trainees, and for patient safety and quality. Supports the service through effectively participating in consistent communication and organization of a multidisciplinary team. Provides delegation of anesthesia technicians, residents, interns, and associates’ duties and provides patient care when needed. Assists with the training of on-boarding technicians, any additional skills teachings of existing staffed technicians, equipment management and troubleshooting. Coaches and guides technicians under his/her supervision while coordinating with the Anesthesia Technician IV-Supervisor. Demonstrates professionalism and excellence by performing as a role model for clinical and service excellence.

What you need to know

Essential Personnel: Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.Schedule: May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends or ‘on call’ duty. Willing to work a flexible schedule and understand the need to work occasional overtime when necessary.Requires working different shifts and participating in On Call coverage.On Call Coverage: While taking call, the technician will need to respond within 30 minutes of an emergency call to report to duty.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or related area or equivalent education and experience

  • Six years of technical experience in veterinary medicine, anesthesia, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • LVT, Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists (AVTA), or Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT)

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry through electronic medical record

  • Intermediate knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as but not limited to anesthesia machines, fluid pumps, multi-parameter monitoring equipment, blood gas analyzers, CO2 monitors, anesthesia ventilator, anesthesia monitoring equipment, defibrillators, and other equipment required for anesthetic management of veterinary patients

  • Must be able to work within time constraints and in a crisis situation

  • Familiarization with injectable and inhalant anesthesia

  • Strong animal handling skills and positioning of patients for surgical procedures

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and positively at all levels within the anesthesia service and the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Responsibilities:

Clinical Service Coordination

  • Independently assigns technicians and students to cases; coordinates and organizes the anesthesia schedule.

  • Answers service management questions and oversees floor efficiency.

  • Serves as point person and reviews anesthesia requests prior to the shift and as added on.

  • Accurately communicates information regarding the schedule and staffing resources with the liaison, supervisor, clinician, and other related services.

  • Makes fair and consistent assignments, taking into consideration team member competency.

  • Communicates with team members concerning changes in their assignments.

  • Gives a complete and accurate report to oncoming board runner, if needed.

  • Serves as a resource person to team members using their advanced knowledge of techniques, procedures, equipment, and supplies.

  • Makes rounds to ensure duties and assignments are completed by team members in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Demonstrates and promotes professional practice of all team members.

  • Assists with orienting new team members.

  • Schedules team members to have adequate time to complete their assigned duties.

  • Delegate certain duties to liaison and assist with maintaining progress of technician responsibilities.

Anesthesia Duties

  • Performs and assists faculty, residents, interns, and students with all anesthesia patient care duties to maintain proper anesthetic levels and analgesia.

  • Assists with critical and intensive nursing care or life-sustaining emergency care as needed.

  • Provides physical restraint for safe handling of patients.

  • Records or assists students in recording the patient’s physiological data, all medications given, and any notes on anesthesia records.

General Duties

  • Maintains compliance for surveys.

  • Performs periodic patient safety checks.

  • Directs supply requests and unresolved issues to the designated resource.

  • Locates, connects, operates, and troubleshoots equipment.

  • Follows protocols and policies to request supplies and handle broken equipment.

  • Adheres to all TAMU, VMTH, and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ensures that all controlled substances used are properly documented and accounted for.

  • Ensures that all charges generated from the anesthesia service are captured and correctly entered into the medical record.

  • Restocks supplies, drugs, and solutions.

  • Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient safety.

  • Maintains and operates point of care laboratory equipment and patient monitoring equipment.

  • Arranges for anesthesia service equipment maintenance when necessary.

  • Logs any maintenance for inventory control of capital equipment within the service area.

  • Arranges and/or obtains quotes for maintenance and/or repairs.

Maintain safe, clean, sanitary work environment

  • Maintains and supervises a sanitary and well-organized service area.

  • Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service area.

  • Provides best practices for infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment.

  • Helps provide oversight for faculty, staff, and students in the service area-specific safety procedures.

  • Uses proper PPE and follows safety guidelines when handling soiled/infectious items.

  • Performs daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of the anesthesia areas.

  • Learns and is responsible for MSDS guidelines of chemicals used within the service and uses proper chemicals for cleaning.

Teaching, Training & Clinical Research

  • Assists residents/students with finding their cases and working them up as appropriate.

  • Assists with veterinary student teaching labs as assigned.

  • Demonstrates mastery of anesthesia skills test and RECOVER training within six months of hire. Assists in clinical research cases including necessary record keeping.

  • Participates in CE classes and local seminars as scheduling permits.

Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures:

  • Maintains and remains current with all required training by Texas A&M and VMTH.

  • Follows all Texas A&M and VMTH policies and procedures.

  • Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate.

  • Enters all time and leave requests to direct supervisor in a timely manner.

  • Communicates via various media throughout the shift or while on-call according to protocol (ex: text, Microsoft Teams, GroupMe, e-mail, etc).

  • Assists in revising and preparing policies.

  • Independently maintains assigned technician responsibilities.

  • Maintains service documents as necessary.

  • Assists in maintaining compliance for AAHA/AVMA/IACUC/AALAC/USDA surveys.

  • Provides emergency Anesthesia call in the small animal clinics with supervision.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
