Job Summary / Purpose

Plans, organizes and administers comprehensive nursing care in accordance with department policies, procedures and standards of care and directs nursing care activities of team members.

Responsibilities

  • Standard of Care: Enforces established standards and scope of care for the unit in accordance to policy and national standards. Oversees that staff nurses provide an accurate and complete record of nursing observations and care. Oversees competency documentation of new and established personnel. Ensures that nurse/patient assignments are in line with the established competencies of the individual nurse. Acts as a resource to team members.

  • Communication: Maintains open communication with other departments to coordinate efficient patient care. Maintains open and honest communication with the Director of Critical Care. Ensures confidentiality of all information.

  • Report Skills: Provides an accurate and comprehensive report to the oncoming shift coordinator to help establish continuity of the unit processes. Takes report from off-going shift coordinator and delegates tasks as needed to provide continuity of care according to coworker's experience, abilities and the patient acuity.

  • Unit Staffing: Assists with interviewing, hiring and evaluating staff as needed per policy; helps ensure licensure, competencies and mandatory inservices for staff are current.; Completes unit schedule in timely fashion; In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibility for the management of the unit. Assists Critical Care Director in counseling employees per policy and documents appropriately. Works closely with the staff nurses to ensure staffing levels are appropriate in all critical care areas based on patient census and acuity.

  • Evaluation: Reassesses patients at appropriate intervals following interventions. Notifies physician as necessary to modify interventions. Adjusts nursing care to meet patient's emerging and changing needs.

  • Documentation: Documents response to treatments, medications, therapies and teaching to assure that patient's records are up-to-date. Maintains accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care to ensure accurate documentation of said observations. Maintains accurate documentation of interventions and supplies used. Completes and documents chart checks to comply with current policy.

  • Privacy: Assures privacy of all patient information to protect patient rights and meet HIPPA guidelines. Reports suspected violations immediately.

  • Environment & Patient Safety: Maintains patient and work environment to maximize safe working space. Promptly removes all used and soiled equipment, linen, etc. to appropriate location. BMV scanning rates comply with current policy. Reports all patient safety and hazard concerns immediately.

  • Supplies: Assists the Critical Care Director to ensure that staff nurses accurately document charges and supplies used.

  • Time Management: Clocks in according to policy. Demonstrates effective time management by completing required work within the 12-hour shift. Assists with budgetary requirements for the unit as determined by the Critical Care Director. Writes (or delegates the writing of) the critical care schedule as required by the Critical Care Director.

  • Professional & Educational: Remains current in critical care skills in order to work the clinical areas at any time as indicated. Maintains RN license according to BNE Guidelines. Remains current in mandatory in-services. Attends inside and outside in-services to keep abreast of current practices in critical care. Assists with the orientation of new employees and floated staff.

  • License and Competency: Maintains RN license to adhere to Texas Board of Nursing Guidelines and serve the organization in a licensed capacity. Takes responsibility for meeting competency requirements. Assists with the orientation of new employees and floated staff as requested and assigned.

  • Meeting/In-service Attendance: Attends in-services, workshops, and reads current journals to keep abreast of new developments in the medical and nursing fields. Attends 6 unit meetings per year, all mandatory in-services, and completes annual competencies. Attends other meetings as designated by Director.

  • Management: Attends meetings as assigned by Director; Assists with monthly unit meetings and ongoing communication with employees; Maintains open communication with other departments to coordinate efficient patient care; Participates in bed management and bi-weekly discharge planning rounds; Works with Director to guide Performance Improvement initiatives; Assists with other hospital functions such as performance Improvement, Quality Assurance audits, Unit councils/teams, Nurses' Week functions. Takes report from off-going shift coordinator specifying general overview of patient acuities throughout the unit. Oversees ongoing process improvement strategies as needed, both in the unit and throughout the organization, as identified by the Critical Care Director.

  • Patient Care: Remains current with patient conditions in the unit. Attends critical care rounds daily (dayshift only). Monitors admission to critical care in accordance with admission criteria.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Education: Associates Degree, Nursing

Experience: Two years nursing experience

Required Licensure and Certifications

Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Texas; American Heart Association BLS

Pay Range

$33.52 - $48.60 /hour
