Description

Under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, the intern will support the development of an updated Parks and Recreation Master Plan, working with city staff and consultant firm to collect data, assist with analysis, and help implement project components. This internship provides hands-on experience in public service, community engagement, event planning, and environmental stewardship, while supporting the mission of creating vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable parks and recreational services for the community.

Professional development benefits of the internship program include the ability to access additional assessments and resources to enhance self-awareness and professional development, participate in tours and discussions with key departments to learn about their roles, as well as attend a city council meeting (or view via Channel 19) to obtain knowledge of the decision-making processes of local government and the role of the department in supporting city-wide policies and initiative

Principal Duties

  1. Gather and organize existing planning documents and parks and recreation facility inventories.

  2. Prepare materials for public workshops and engagement events, assist in summarizing community feedback and support creation of engagement summaries and findings reports.

  3. Assist in planning, promoting, and executing recreational programs, events, and activities for community members of all ages.

  4. Perform analytical support and data analysis, to include, but not limited to collecting and analyzing data related to program participation, park conditions, and community feedback; supporting demographic data compilation and analysis; and conducting research on best practices in parks and recreation.

  5. Prepare summary reports and supporting documentation and assist in drafting sections of the master plan.

  6. Assist in filing, organizing, and maintaining records, both digital and physical, for various park and recreation programs

  7. Develop and present an individual project that aligns with the city’s goals or operational needs. This may include researching best practices, preparing initiatives, or evaluating current processes.

  8. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required: Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program related to Recreation Management, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, or a similar field.

Strong interest in public service, community engagement, parks, and recreation management

Excellent organizational, communication and teamwork skills

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Eagerness to learn and contribute to the department's goals

A positive, professional attitude and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service to the public

Ability to perform physical tasks related to park maintenance, such as lifting, walking, and standing for extended periods

Preferred: Previous volunteer or work experience in parks, recreation, or event management

Supplemental Information

30-40 hours/week; May 19, 2025 – August 1, 2025
