The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist I provides specialized knowledge in the operation and support of assigned area within an environmental health and safety program.

Other Factors: Ability to tolerate moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises and chemical substances.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of health and safety experience or related.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health rules, regulations, and standards.

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a safety-related discipline such as: industrial hygiene, fire safety, occupational safety or occupational health.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Inspections - Performs laboratory inspections to ensure a safe environment that is compliant with rules, codes, and regulations applicable to EHS. This duty will require driving from site to site, using a University vehicle to complete duties. Performs assessments in accordance with the Texas A&M EHS programs under supervisor's and more senior specialist's guidance.

  • Documentation and Reporting - Enters inspection findings into the BioRAFT database to generate reports that summarize the results of the laboratory inspections. Submit reports as instructed. Assist with laboratory questions and needs in response to inspection reports.

  • Equipment Inspections - Perform fume hood or safety shower inspections as necessary per operating procedures.

  • Emergency Response - Responds with other EHS personnel to emergencies and assists emergency responders as needed.
