The Network Specialist performs the day-to-day tasks to ensure that the MTC voice and data network meets the needs of residential and business customers throughout our West Central Illinois footprint. The Network Specialist performs installation, monitoring, and maintenance of equipment and facilities used to deliver services to our customers, including DC systems, AC systems, IP & Ethernet transport, IP routing, Ethernet switching, GPON & xDSL subscriber access equipment, voice switching & call routing equipment and OSS/BSS integration.

  • Installs, maintains and troubleshoots network equipment, such as router/switch equipment, transport equipment, DHCP servers, DNS servers and voice switching equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and decommissions equipment and cabling in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepares for installations and upgrades by reviewing work orders. Obtains the necessary equipment, supplies, and tools for the orders and evaluates installation location.
  • Identifies, labels, measures, terminates and physically routes the cables that supply AC and/or DC power or transmit data.
  • Assists with on-call rotation, maintenance window and emergency outages as needed. Performs emergency repairs as required.
  • Assists in the installation, servicing, and removal of CO facilities.
  • Repairs and maintains office power supply equipment including rectifiers, generators, ringing machines, and distribution panels and fuses.
  • Tests, maintains, and evaluates performance of the following equipment: customer line, switching gear, trunks leaving and entering CO, and billing and traffic metering equipment.
  • Performs maintenance of routine equipment and central offices by following schedule established by the Network Operations Manager.
  • Ties cross-connections to establish, modify, or terminate service and coordinates with connecting companies when establishing, maintaining, and removing special circuits.
  • Performs acceptance testing and related duties of manufacturer-installed CO equipment.
  • Evaluates the quality of toll, EAS, special circuits, and other carrier facilities.
  • Performs call screening and routing translation additions and/or changes required to accommodate network, feature, and trunking changes.
  • Complies with all industry standards, safety rules and regulations, and company policies.
  • Processes new installation service orders and service changes orders in a timely manner based on department guidelines.
  • Maintains accurate subscriber records in OSS/BSS and updated ancillary documentation.
  • Prepares quarterly reports on subscriber services for reconciliation purposes.
  • Performs physical inventory on network equipment at the end of each quarter.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
