job summary:

The role involves maintaining, operating, and repairing ammonia and Freon-based refrigeration systems, ensuring safe and efficient functionality, compliance with regulations, and providing emergency response while working flexible shifts, including nights and weekends.

Required:

  • License: Must hold a Blue Seal (Toxic) Operating License issued by New Jersey.

  • 3+ years of experience with ammonia and Freon-based refrigeration systems.

  • Familiarity with screw and reciprocating compressors, pumps, HVAC units, boilers, air compressors, and associated control systems.

  • Knowledge of ammonia system pump-downs and repairs.

  • Understanding of chemical testing for cooling towers and ammonia systems.

  • Ability to read refrigeration blueprints, P&ID diagrams, and cut sheets.

  • electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.

  • Preferred: Experience in produce/food processing facilities and cooling processes.

  • Night shift and weekend required and holidays

  • Hours can be 7PM-7AM 3 days a week or 4-10pm, will need to work weekend rotation

responsibilities:

  • Maintain ammonia refrigeration and Freon-based cooling systems, including operation, maintenance, and repairs.

  • Operate and maintain single, two-stage, and cascade ammonia systems and subsystems.

  • Monitor and identify abnormal pressures, temperatures, and conditions within refrigeration systems; adjust, repair, or schedule service as needed.

  • Understand and manage refrigeration system components, such as vacuum pumps, chillers, evaporators, condensers, compressors, controls, and valves.

  • Perform and delegate inspections and preventative maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, annually) on refrigeration equipment and cooler machinery, both on- and off-site.

  • Conduct general maintenance duties, including plumbing, valve replacement, fixture installation, leak detection, and repairs.

  • Handle hazardous materials per OSHA and EPA regulations.

  • Monitor, record, and document system readings; provide reports and troubleshoot as required.

  • Respond to emergency breakdowns of refrigeration systems.

  • Procure quotations and bids for work scopes, repairs, parts, and construction projects.

  • Ensure continuous training and competency updates on refrigeration standards and practices.

  • Train personnel for routine system checks and adherence to SOPs.

  • Act on emergency action plans (EAP) and technical guidance during malfunctions or emergencies.

  • Handle unscheduled and emergency equipment shutdowns.

  • Ensure all refrigeration equipment operates safely and optimally.

  • Maintain continuous operation of facility utility systems and support preventative maintenance programs.

  • Assist in record-keeping and training requirements for ammonia refrigeration systems in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
