Case Western Reserve University Research Assistant 1 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in medical field of digestive diseases.  The Research Assistant 1 will plan and carry out research projects in accordance with Institutional Review Board-approved research protocols. The research projects will involve conducting randomized controlled trials and longitudinal surveys. Duties include data collection, entry, cleaning and coding and may provide input on overall study direction, addressing key issues in recruitment, retention, and data collection. The research assistant will work primarily with human subjects.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab / research skills and carry out research protocol as outlined by principal investigator and project manager. Conduct research activities related to data collection; informed consent, biopsychosocial assessments (e.g. EEG, heart rate, etc), subject and clinician interviews, and tissue and specimen sample collection. (50%)
  2. Record results of chart reviews and data acquisition of subjects enrolled in IRB approved research protocols. This will include reviewing the electronic medical records and study specific case report forms pertaining to digestive disease research. (20%)
  3. Conduct analysis of data collected for projects and analyzing secondary datasets. (10%)
  4. Maintain records of research studies. Responsible for assisting with data management on projects including the creation of databases, data cleaning, and reports with descriptive statistics. (10%)
  5. Maintain required certifications for protection of human subjects (CREC hours) and study regulatory compliance. (6%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments performed with collected tissue and specimens. (5%)
  2. Order Laboratory supplies which may include but not limited to electrodes, gel, gloves, masks, disinfectants, pens, paper, etc. (5%)
  3. Perform other duties as assigned. (4%)

     

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Contact with University Hospitals physicians and staff to discuss research. Limited contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees and trainees to maintain workflow. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General clinical and laboratory environment. The employee is exposed bloodborne pathogens, chemical, laser, radioactive materials, select agents and commercial products. This position will be required to attend the following trainings: Phlebotomy Training, Bloodborne Pathogen Safety Training, Handling & Shipping of Hazardous Materials Training, Laboratory Safety Training, Successful completion
