Case Western Reserve University Director of Regional Development, School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Director of Regional Development will have primary responsibility for the solicitation of individual, corporate and foundation gifts in the range of $100,000 to $250,000 for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine from its natural constituency and beyond, representing schools and colleges, university priorities, and general areas of interest. The director will be charged to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward 100-125 prospects from identified regions for the School of Medicine, partnering with other development officers as appropriate. The director will have direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, with the expectation that they will be traveling off campus for much of this function.  As part of the university development team, the director will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with central and school-based colleagues.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Qualify and cultivate a portfolio of 100 to 125 regional prospects of alumni, friends, grateful patients with a giving potential in the range of $100,000 to $250,000; develop and implement strategic cultivation and solicitation strategies for each. (30%) 
  2. Travel extensively within identified regions and nationally to meet face-to-face with prospects and donors. On average, director is expected to travel twice per month for planned trips ranging from one day to three days at a time. (25%)
  3. Develop and implement major gift prospect cultivation activities regionally in coordination with development and alumni relations colleagues. (15%)
  4. Partner with alumni classes to identify leadership around Reunions by working with class committees, increasing class engagement, and raising dollars for scholarships via in-person meetings, emails, mailed letters and phone calls. (15%)
  5. Work with sub-committee on the Medical Alumni Board to cultivate prospects and implement the mission of the Board. (10%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Serve as primary development staff contact for identified regions and work with departments in the planning and implementation of a regional fundraising effort. (5%)
  2. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. (<1%)

     

     

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with the vice president and vice dean, executive directors and directors of departments.  Contact with faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.

University: Daily contact with the president's office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.

External: Daily contact with corporation and foundation representatives, community organizers/advocates, federal, state and local government officials.  Contact with foreign visitors, healthcare officials and academic boards and organizations as required to perform essential functions.

Students: Infrequent contact with undergraduate, graduate and professional students as required to perform essential functions.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory responsibility.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 7 or more years of progressive professional experience in a related field, preferably with at least 5 years at an academic medical center or hospital and a corresponding track record in closing major gifts.

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

High degree of energy, creativity, flexibility, organization and interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.

Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new programs.
