JOB TITLE:  *Educational Sign Language Interpreter *

REPORTS TO:  Assistant Superintendent of Special Education

*SALARY RANGE: * According to the Terms of the Master Agreement for MEA

 

JOB SUMMARY:  Working within the local Districts through CGRESD, under the direction of the Teacher Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and reporting to the Director of Special Education.  The Interpreter will also assist the teacher(s) with other teaching/learning activities and work with teacher(s) as a member of an instructional team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides translation between spoken/sign language in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, special education classrooms, regular classrooms, vocational programs, work sites, or other special activities such as extra-curricular activities and non-academic situations.
  • Provides general supervision for all students, regular education and special education in such activities as lunch room, playground and hallways and to provide whatever assistance which may be needed to assure that the unique needs of the hearing impaired children are met.
  • Utilizes instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials and techniques that meet the individual educational needs of students with hearing impairments.
  • Assists the teacher(s) by working with students on individual and/or small group instructional activities.
  • Participates, as required, as part of an IEP team in planning, educational programs for students.
  • Attends all required workshops and in-services.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude in working with students, parents, staff and community members.
  • Attends all required workshops and in-services.
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to student, parent and staff information.
  • Ensures a safe environment for students at all times.
  • Must be willing to receive additional training to improve job skills.
  • Implements and maintains daily lesson plans as developed by the teacher,
  • Other assigned duties and responsibilities not in conflict with Board policy and/or conditions of employment as outlined in the negotiated Master Agreement.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

High school diploma or equivalency required; two years college preferred.

First Aid and CPR Certified.

Must hold valid BEI 2 or EIPA 4.0 certification acceptable in the State of Michigan or National Certification.

Experience with individuals with developmental, emotional, physical and cognitive impairments is preferred.

Demonstrated competencies in using technology to assist the classroom teacher in instruction.

Working knowledge of training techniques, behavior modification, and task analysis.

Proven exercise in reasonable judgment in handling challenges until supervisory back-up is provided.

Interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate with students, parents, community, peers.

Ability to understand and work with children of all ages.

Must be familiar with the terminology and provisions of the American Disabilities Act (ADA).  

Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and apply active listening skills.

Must have desire to work in the community closely with employers.

Must interact positively and possess patience, self-control and emotional stability when interacting with students, parents/guardians, and staff.
