Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians trainees work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed by only a registered pharmacist.Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED. | Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Must obtain a certified technician certificate within one year of hire. All technicians must maintain registration and certification throughout their employment with the UC Health Pharmacy Department. | Minimum Required: No experience required. Preferred: 1 - 2 Years equivalent experience.PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY): Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect. Procures and distributes medication orders per prescriber request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols:

  • Fills physician orders, medication kits, medication carts, and stock requisitions accurately Replenishes medications in emergency drug containers and floor stock areas accurately Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule

Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures:

  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas accurately within specified time periods Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques

Contributes to the effective operation of the department:

Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds Enters medication orders into pharmacy computer system accurately (if applicable) Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as re
