Job Title: Pipefitter

Job Description

A pipefitter is responsible for performing layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of pipe systems on ships. Utilizing blueprints to precisely fit and assemble pipes, ensuring proper joint preparation for welding, and adhering to strict quality and safety standards within a shipyard environment. This may include tasks like creating fabrication sketches, utilizing burning torches, and conducting pressure tests on completed piping systems.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately read and understand technical drawings to layout pipe systems on the ship.

  • Cut, bend, and fit pipes to the required specifications using various tools and machinery.

  • Properly prepare pipe ends for welding by grinding, beveling, and cleaning.

  • Perform welding operations to join pipes, including tack welding for initial alignment.

  • Assemble and install fabricated pipe sections on the ship, ensuring proper alignment and tolerances.

  • Conduct pressure tests on installed piping systems to verify integrity and identify leaks.

  • Safely handle and move heavy pipes and fittings.

  • Maintain high standards of workmanship and adhere to quality control procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in ship repair, shipyard operations, marine, mechanical, and marine repair.

  • Proficiency in blueprint reading, valves, piping, welding, and brazing.

  • At least four (4) years of experience as a pipefitter with five (5) years of experience in pipefitting, including four (4) years in maritime pipefitting.

  • Strong knowledge of P-73 joint fit-up and Silver Brazing theory.

  • Ability to certify in MT Braze (B-1) and MT Braze (B-2).

  • Thorough understanding of marine pipe fabrication, repair processes, and targeting.

  • Capable of interpreting drawings, specifications, and Navy/MSC/ABS standard items and manuals.

  • Proficiency in basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and familiarity with U.S. standard and metric measurement systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain DBIDS.

  • Must be able to get OSHA/FW certification.

  • Physically and medically capable of wearing all required PPE, including hard hats, respirators, safety harnesses, and other safety gear as per OSHA standards.

Work Environment

Work will initially be performed at the shipyard but will eventually move to NBSD 32nd Street aboard the USS Stockdale once the ship arrives in San Diego, CA. The role involves working in a shipyard environment, handling various tools and equipment, and adhering to strict safety standards. The dress code includes wearing all required PPE, including hard hats, respirators, and safety harnesses.

This is a Contract position based out of Chula Vista, California.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
