Job Title: Lead Set-Up Machinist

Job Description

The Lead Set-Up Machinist is an intermediate-to-advanced level position responsible for setting up and operating machines according to company procedures and instructions. The role involves maintaining quality, dimensions, and key characteristics of the products, performing periodic checks, and ensuring that CNC mills and lathes are set up properly. The machinist will make necessary adjustments to optimize productivity and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate machines according to job specifications and shop traveler instructions.

  • Perform periodic checks to ensure machines are well-stocked with needed materials and maintained properly.

  • Conduct spot checks of the finished product to ensure it is defect-free and ready for the next production step.

  • Make adjustments to machine control speed, material feed, and proper cuts to optimize productivity and efficiency.

  • Follow company operational policies and procedures.

  • Maintain the company's quality and safety standards.

  • Edit CNC programs and machine a wide variety of materials.

  • Lead a team in a fast-paced, flexible environment running 5+ machines.

  • Ensure strong collaboration amongst the team to integrate manufacturing capabilities with design objectives.

  • Program mills and/or lathes by entering instructions, including zeros and reference points.

  • Set tool registers, offsets, compensations, and conditional switches.

  • Review blueprints to determine product dimensions and tolerances.

  • Calculate requirements, including basic math, and adjust three and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers.

Essential Skills

  • 5-10 years of machinist experience

  • 5-10 years of CNC lathe and/or mill experience

  • 5-10 years of CNC programming, set-up, and production experience

  • Ability to edit CNC programs

  • Experience machining a wide variety of materials

  • Excellent geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and blueprint familiarity coupled with inspection knowledge

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong technical judgment and autonomy in managing operations

  • Ability to support the team without direct oversight from senior management

  • Experience in leading decision-making for setup, fixturing, machine troubleshooting, and probing

  • Strong collaboration skills to ensure integration of manufacturing capabilities with design objectives

  • Active participation in the vehicle design process, offering strategic manufacturing insights and solutions

Work Environment

First shift hours are Monday-Thursday from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and Friday from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Once comfortable, optional overtime is available on Saturdays. The work environment is a standard machine shop equipped with 13 mills, 13 lathes, Fanuc controls, and Haas machinery.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chino, California.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $34.00
