UL, LLC Vice President Software Engineering in Chicago, Illinois

UL Solutions is seeking an exceptional leader for VP of Software Engineering to lead the ULTRUS product compliance and sustainability software portfolio. This pivotal leadership role will drive the engineering development of our ULTRUS collections that solve customer problems across product stewardship, ESG, learning and workplace safety.

We are seeking an experienced Vice President of Software Engineering to lead our US-based and global engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a proven track record of moving fast and delivering high-quality and commercially successful software products.

This role requires excellent collaboration skills and a passion for innovation to help our customers meet ever-changing regulatory, supply chain, sustainability, and safety needs.

  • A senior leader who collaborates with other departments, such as product management, marketing, and sales, to ensure successful product launches and customer satisfaction.

  • Develop and implement the software engineering vision and strategy aligned with the company’s overall vision and objectives

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing technology team, including software engineers and developers, including hiring, coaching and performance management.

  • Ensure the people strategy optimizes global locations, levels, and technical expertise for both internal and 3rd party resources.

  • Develop and execute the engineering strategy, key processes and working groups (e.g., pods) to deliver the company's goals and objectives.

  • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of software products and solutions.

  • Ensure the engineering team follows best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing, and continuous integration.

  • Stay relevant by understanding industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation (e.g., AI, ML, etc.)

  • Manage the engineering budget and optimize resources effectively.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Performance manage the team by developing goals, metrics, career counseling, feedback, while ensuring that all policies are understood and adhered to.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business objectives.

  • Regularly report progress to senior leadership on the state of the engineering organization, sharing successes, and identifying areas that need support.

  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Strong technical background and experience in software engineering.

  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software products on time and within budget.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to think strategically and execute tactically.

  • Experience with agile development methodologies.

  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.

  • Excellent communication skills. Must be able to effective and succinctly communicate in writing and orally to executive management.

  • An entrepreneurial, creative thinker with an action-orientated approach characterized by speed and productivity.

  • An ability to operate at the highest ethical levels and project this integrity to customers and employees.

  • Ability to perform with high pressure and short timelines.

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $239,000 to $318,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 40% of the base salary and long term incentive plan of 50% of base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (20 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
