We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Senior Manager - Communications on our Scientific Publication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

As a Senior Manager - Communications, you will manage the JAMA and JAMA Network’s external and internal communications efforts. In collaboration with the Director, execute a multichannel communications strategy that amplifies the value of the JAMA Network to the research community, the media, and the public. This includes, but is not limited to, social media, targeted media outreach, and author outreach initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications

  • Collaborate with JAMA and JAMA Network media relations to identify opportunities for media pitching, refine searches in media monitoring platform, improve ways to communicate with media, and developing list of key media contacts for outreach.

  • Collaborate with the Director to develop and execute annual communications plans based on JAMA and JAMA Network priorities, scientific meeting/Online First calendar, and other initiatives as defined.

  • Develop and implement communications campaigns to market super channels.

  • Responsible for pitching JAMA and JAMA Network studies, based on study topics to reporters

  • Serve as key stakeholder on content maximization team and develop strategies based on group’s recommendations

  • Coordinate press conferences on identified issues to support JAMA Summit.

    Content Development

  • Identify external challenges for JAMA/ JAMA Network and develop ways to mitigate them through messaging, such as talking points for editors.

  • Lead earned media pitching by developing targeted outreach and press releases.

  • Collaborate with the marketing and graphic arts team to develop engaging images to support communications priorities.

  • M anage website transitions and develop Media Kits.

  • Develop and maintain collateral to support JAMA Summits

  • Collaborate with the annual report writer to develop the JAMA annual report and connect with key stakeholders to identify narratives that support the report.

    Social Media

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on JAMA/JAMA Network content providing guidance on what content to promote on social media platforms.

  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to identify appropriate methods of engagement.

  • Responsible for identifying physician influencers and evaluating potential partnership opportunities.

    Analytics and Reporting

  • Develop internal reporting to illustrate the impact and reach of social media and media relations to stakeholders.

  • Leverage data and analytics proactively to refine communications program and demonstrate the impact of communications.

    Staff Management

  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for professional staff, including setting objectives and development opportunities.

  • Responsible for evaluating performance and developing staff.

    May include other responsibilities as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a related discipline preferred

  • Minimum 7 + years of experience with marketing/communications required; in an academic medical center or PR agency with clients in the medical/health care fields strongly preferred

  • Minimum 3 + years experience with people management.

  • Experience communicating complex medical information preferred.

  • Experience with Meltwater, Cision, or other media monitoring platform strongly preferred.

  • Experience with Tableau, Google Analytics preferred.

  • Previous direct experience developing and executing communications strategy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Proven ability to work well under deadline pressure, while managing multiple responsibilities and projects required
