Axis Operations Manager (Team Lead) in Chicago, Illinois

How does this role contribute to our collective success?

The Operations Manager will oversee and support a team of Account Managers (AMs) and Senior Account Managers (SAMs), ensuring quality assurance, fostering professional development, managing relationships with key stakeholders, and optimizing processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the underwriting operations function.

What will you do in this role?

  • Leading and Managing the Team

  • Clearly define expectations for team performance and individual responsibilities.

  • Implement regular team meetings to discuss goals, challenges, and achievements.

  • Provide ongoing feedback and coaching to team members to support their professional growth.

  • Develop a structured training program for new hires and ongoing professional development opportunities for existing team members.

  • Identify specific skills or competencies that team members need to develop and create targeted training modules or resources.

  • Encourage participation in industry seminars, workshops, or certification programs to enhance knowledge and skills.

  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment.

  • Supporting Underwriting Tasks

  • Review complex cases, providing guidance on risk assessment, or resolving disputes.

  • Address questions or concerns from AMs/SAMs during the underwriting process.

  • Clarify the escalation process for challenging cases or issues that require higher-level input.

  • Quality Assurance and Process Improvement

  • Provide detailed guidelines or checklists for conducting monthly quality audits on issued policies.

  • Document common errors or trends identified during quality audits and develop corrective actions or process improvements.

  • Encourage proactive suggestions from team members for streamlining workflows or enhancing efficiency.

  • Relationship Management and Communication

  • Establish clear communication channels with key broker contacts to address inquiries, negotiate terms, or resolve issues.

  • Schedule regular meetings or touchpoints with IT stakeholders to discuss system enhancements, troubleshoot technical issues, or provide feedback on software updates.

  • Develop standardized templates or reports to facilitate communication between the underwriting team and other departments or stakeholders.

  • Expense Management

  • Implement a tracking system to monitor and analyze expenses related to overtime, travel, and entertainment.

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings or optimization.

  • Provide guidance or training to team members on expense reporting procedures and compliance with company policies.

You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.

About You:

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with a preference for business-related disciplines.

  • Minimum of 2+ years of leadership experience.

  • Previous experience working in commercial lines (Property & Casualty) insurance.

  • General working knowledge of business distribution channels (wholesale versus retail insurance, and Lower Middle Market versus Complex).

  • Effective problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze issues, find the root cause of the problem, and consider a wide range of alternatives before acting.

  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.

Role Factors:

In this role, you will typically be required to:

Embrace the hybrid culture offered at AXIS, you need to be in office 3 days per week.

Much of the work involves using computers for data entry, analysis, and communication. Comfort with prolonged screen time is necessary.

While much of the work may be desk-bound, there might be occasions requiring mobility within the office environment, such as attending meetings or accessing filing systems.

What we offer:

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of 68k to 90k. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
