Summary
The Nurse Manager has 24/7 oversight for assigned personnel that support nursing staff on the inpatient units.
Nurse Manager is responsible for maintaining a patient-focused, team-oriented culture, working in collaboration with all other medical, clinical and therapeutic disciplines to ensure optimal service and superior outcomes.
As a key member of the leadership team at Mary Free Bed, the Nurse Manager contributes to performance improvement quality projects as directed by the Nursing Director and Chief Nursing Officer. The Nurse Manager will sit on committees impacting quality improvement, patient safety, and others as assigned.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Staff will provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.
In collaboration with the Nursing Director, provide the nursing clinical oversight for specific groups of clinical staff, including the registered nurses and nurse technicians.
Provide guidance to nurses who provide treatment and administer medications.
Assist families, patients and staff with escalated issues.
Responsible for training, staffing, and performance reviews of assigned team.
Responsible for the recruitment, selection, and training of specific job categories of nursing employees, i.e., Registered Nurses and Nurse Technicians. Provides ongoing mentoring, development, staff selection and performance appraisal of staff reporting directly to this position with support from the nursing director as appropriate.
Assure staff competence to perform job responsibilities is assessed, demonstrated, and maintained, according to regulatory and accreditation requirements and in alignment with recognized standards of care and best practice benchmarks.
Along with the Clinical Care Coordinators, identify risks to employee safety and takes appropriate steps to reduce those risks, and maintains a physical work environment that reflects the high-quality nursing services delivered at Mary Free Bed.
Ensure compliance with the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals as well as other recognized measures of quality patient care.
Utilize organizational resources such as the Lean, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other established performance improvement mechanisms to improve the quality of nursing services provided at Mary Free Bed.
Provide input on ways to enhance the culture of patient safety and employee accountability for all aspects of nursing care.
Responsible to participate in innovative and effective patient safety programs in coordination with other MFB leaders, and monitor performance results to reduce key patient safety risks that are identified for the patient populations served
Participate or delegate Nursing participation in cross-disciplinary quality improvement projects as needed.
Maintain effective interpersonal communication and working relationships with MFB leaders, staff, physicians, and other key stakeholders.
Work closely with other clinical leaders to maintain integrated clinical programs providing coordinated patient care is required.
Demonstrate excellent customer service standards and behaviors, while encouraging, coaching, and mentoring employees to do the same.
Oversee internal customer service initiatives, including teamwork and direct communication between co-workers.
Responsible for implementation of Joint Commission, CARF, CMS, and state hospital standards, as directed by the Nursing Director/Chief Nursing Officer. Ensures care is delivered according to these standards. Responsible for “accreditation readiness” as a key component of the role in collaboration with the nursing director/CNO.
Assist in monitoring Patient Satisfaction for the Nursing Department, including analysis of results, and performance improvement initiatives.
Maintain a patient admission process that does not delay or reject admissions as a result of staffing or equipment issues is an organizational priority. Identify issues and barriers and work with stakeholders to find an appropriate resolution.
Collaborate with the Nursing Director to provide input on the annual budget for each Nursing unit.
Responsible for directing the daily staffing levels along with the Clinical Care Coordinators, based on budgeted staffing grids and census acuity.

Licensure Requirements:
Registered nurse in the state of Illinois.
Education :
BSN is preferred. If a candidate does not have a BSN, the candidate is required to be enrolled within 3 months in a BSN program with continual progress towards the completion of the BSN. The completion of the BSN shall be no later than 36 months from the offer of employment.
Certifications:
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required or completed within 6 months of hire.
CRRN required. Must sit for the examination at earliest point of qualification. If applicant currently meets the requirement to sit for the certification exam, delays in doing so may result in the loss of position.
Experience:
A minimum of two years of relevant nursing leadership experience is required.
Accurate decision-making, strong leadership skills and critical thinking. Ability to manage a group of employees including identification of performance goals and completion of detailed performance reviews. Strong collaborative skills.
Time management and organizational skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Information management skills and ability to interpret, communicate, and present data.
Excellent computer skills with specific emphasis on Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Must be competent with computer systems for the purpose of documenting patient care.

Required to stand, sit, talk, type, read and hear
Required to use hands and arms to handle, feel, carry and work
Required to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and rise from a kneeling position while performing patient care
Required to be independently mobile, with frequent bending and reaching overhead for activities such as positioning and transferring of patients and equipment
Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
