Key Responsibilities:

Primary role is to provide expertise and program management for all aircraft communications and surveillance projects and to act as a test pilot.

As a Flight Test Captain/Technical Pilot, provide expertise and program management for all aircraft Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance projects. Participate in ICAO, FAA and Industry workgroups and meetings. Develop, coordinate and communicate United’s position on regulatory requirements. Responsible for coordinating with UAL NOC Air Traffic Strategy, Tech Ops Avionics Engineering and Flight Standards the future aircraft hardware needs reference CNS/ATM initiatives. Respond to aircraft technology questions collected via the various Flight Operations media. Ensure existing Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance systems like SATCOM, ACARS, FANS, WX Radar, TCAS, and ADS-B Out maintain operational readiness and respond to reports of failures that can jeopardize efficient aircraft routing. In addition, tests aircraft on the ground and flight to check operation and performance. Ascertains that normal and emergency systems operate on major maintenance and factory accepted aircraft within acceptable tolerances as outlined in the specific UA Flight Manual and Flight Test Manual. Flies all Non-Routine Flight Operations (NRFO) Group II missions requiring other than normal procedures. Flies other flights as directed such as Group I NRFO, STC, Operational Confirmation, or position flights. Provides detailed write-ups and post-flight debriefing as appropriate. Performs related duties as assigned such as performing qualitative and quantitative engineering flight tests on aircraft, evaluating systems on proposed projects and current aircraft, attending pilot training courses, and maintaining required proficiency level on each type of aircraft. Maintains all qualifications current such as medical, passport, visas and badging.

Technical Pilot Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support needs and requirements of United Airlines with regards to onboard communication and surveillance avionics/computer systems for all fleets.

  • Have knowledge of the various communication and surveillance initiatives worldwide and how they affect United’s fleet and Pilot training requirements.

  • Participate in ICAO, FAA and Industry workgroups and meetings. Develop, coordinate and communicate United’s position on regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for coordinating with UAL NOC Air Traffic Strategy, Tech Ops Avionics Engineering and Flight Standards the future aircraft hardware needs reference CNS/ATM initiatives.

  • Responsible for evaluating current operations to improve operational metrics by enhancing the application of current aircraft capabilities.

  • Coordinate Operation Specification changes to gain approval to use new aircraft technology.

  • Respond to aircraft technology questions collected via the various Flight Operations media.

  • Ensure existing Communications and Surveillance systems like SATCOM, ACARS, FANS, WX Radar, TCAS, and ADS-B Out maintain operational readiness and respond to reports of failures that can jeopardize efficient aircraft routing.

  • Be able to step into Technical Pilot – Navigation, Technical Pilot – Communications, and Technical Pilot – Surveillance roles as necessary to cover workload.

  • Responsible to determine technology items needed in the both the capital plan and yearly budget.

  • Determine areas to increase automation, increasing flight operations’ productivity and efficiency while reducing company costs and pilot workload.

Test Pilot Responsibilities:

  • Maintains qualification and currency in one or more aircraft in both seats as a test pilot

  • Flies test profiles in assigned aircraft

  • Flies Non-Routine Flight Operations (NRFO) Group II missions requiring other than normal procedures.

  • Flies other flights as directed such as Group I NRFO, STC, Operational Confirmation, or position flights.

  • Flies project work such as New Aircraft Acceptance/Delivery, new technology and supplemental type certificate flights as assigned

  • Maintains all qualifications current such as medical, passport, visas and badging

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • College graduate with Bachelor’s degree

  • Airline Transport Pilot

  • Possess current first-class medical

  • Current passport

  • 4+ years of leadership/management experience as an Airline Captain or Military Flight Test/Functional Test Captain

  • Demonstrated management/leadership ability as an airline captain or military flight test pilot

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • BS in Engineering

  • Test Pilot School Graduate

  • Recent Flight Test experience (4 years out of the past 10)

  • Broad range of domestic and international flight experience in multiple fleets

  • Type ratings in United Fleet aircraft

  • Knowledge of Systems engineering

  • Leadership Skills

  • Ability to conduct flight tests
