Job Summary:

The Engineer VIII – Sr. Signal & Communication Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the activities of the Signal & Communication team. This leadership position is responsible for making authoritative decisions and recommendations with a significant impact on the organization. The ideal candidate will exhibit creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in overseeing extensive programs and activities of major consequence.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor the Signal & Communication team, managing project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and design.

  • Oversee the financial and technical aspects of all Signal & Communication projects.

  • Manage the Signal & Communications department budget, including employee utilization, workload, and controlling G&A expenses.

  • Ensure compliance with RailPros SOPs, safety rules, and procedures.

  • Collaborate with the Business Development team to expand RailPros' Signal & Comms practice through regular meetings with existing and potential clients.

  • Represent RailPros at industry events and conferences such as AREMA and REMSA/RSSI.

  • Act as a technical resource for other department personnel in the Signal & Communications area.

  • Review and file all FRA inspection reports completed by field inspectors.

  • Review and file FRA hours of service reports for field employees as required.

  • Conduct quarterly audits for safety rule compliance among field employees.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficient with electronic communications (email, text) and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with FRA Parts 234 and 236, railroad grade crossing and signal system safety rules, Part 228 hours of service requirements, and Part 246 certification requirements for signal employees.

  • Ability to create and deliver formal and technical reports, working papers, and presentations.

  • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong organizational and strategic planning skills.

  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential materials and information with discretion.

    Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program.

  • 10+ years of experience in railroad signal design, construction, installation, inspection, maintenance, and testing (ABS and CTC signal circuits, interlocking, and highway-railway grade crossing warning systems).

    Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in engineering.

  • 20+ years of experience in railroad signaling and communications, with expertise in Positive Train Control (PTC).

  • Committed to life-long learning to stay updated on contemporary issues.

  • Established relationships with railroad and transit clients.

  • Proven business development skills.

    Additional Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE), equivalent, or authorization of CLPO.

  • Member of a professional practice organization, recognized as a national expert or spokesperson for the profession.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support both direct and indirect reports within the Signal & Communication team.
