Duties and Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Director, oversees daily operations of the Comparative Medicine Facility, including office, surgical and clinical areas, specialized facilities (quarantine, isolation, cagewashing), diagnostic laboratory as well as general animal housing and – support areas, and departmental research activities.

  • Prepares, with Director, standard operating procedures for all areas which comply with required federal and AAALAC standards.

  • Serves as a backup to the Operations Manager, providing secondary supervision of Lab Animal Care Technicians.

  • Consults with and apprises investigators of standard operating procedures, space requirements, special handling, equipment and husbandry needs. Provides pre-review of investigator experimental protocols.

  • Responsible for day-to-day oversight of fiscal management of the CMF , including monitoring the daily census for billing purposes. Collaborates with the Director of CMF and the Business Manager in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research on budget planning.

  • Tracks IACUC protocol status, and provides support to the Operations Manager in approving facility access.

  • Leads a working committee to help monitor experimental procedures with animals for compliance, ensure accuracy and completeness of individual animal records, health and experimental records

  • Ensures that all persons with animal contact are enrolled in the occupational health program and are appropriately trained to work with the animals.

  • Supports the Director, to ensure institutional compliance with all federal regulations, AAALAC and OLAW standards, state, local and institutional polices.

  • Responsible for preparing reports of all inspections for review by the animal care and use committee and the 10, and for assisting with drafting responses regarding non-compliance to the oversight agencies.

  • Maintains all required USDA , OLAW , AAALAC and IACUC records, and compile data for annual and semi-annual reports and assurances for these internal and external agencies.

  • Responsible, with Director and IACUC Administrator, for preparing AAALAC application and other required documents.

  • Performs all non-clinical duties of the Director in his/her absence

  • Performs other CMF -relevant duties as assigned.

    Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science ( AALAS ) Laboratory Animal Technologist ( LATG ) certification, Certified Manager of Animal Resources ( CMAR ) certification preferred.

  • Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, Access, Groupwise, Lawson, Kronos, Microsoft Excel, Basic Keyboarding Skills

  • With on-the-job experience, must display knowledge of the departmental protocol tracking system.
