About the Department

UChicagoGRAD, a part of the Office of the Provost that supports graduate education across the University, is an innovative national model for preparing graduate students and postdocs to succeed while at UChicago and beyond. With teams focusing on admissions, fellowship advising, writing support and public speaking training, diversity initiatives, career exploration and planning, and administration, UChicagoGRAD works with campus partners to support students and postdocs at every stage of their academic careers and beyond. UChicagoGRAD functions as a one-stop shop for graduate students and postdocs to access resources that support timely degree completion and to enhance professional preparation that helps them translate their degrees into a variety of careers. UChicagoGRAD works with academic departments and divisions as well as campus-wide offices to develop and implement outreach, recruitment, and yield efforts; graduate and postdoc-focused programs, workshops, and events; training and support tailored to UChicago graduate students and postdocs; and administrative practices and policies in support of graduate education.

Job Summary

The job assists in the design and implementation of advisory programs focused on students\' career developments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary career advisor to graduate students and recent graduate alumni from programs at the University of Chicago.
  • Engage in one-on-one advising that assists students with career exploration, networking, job document preparation, and negotiation.
  • Develop and maintain resources that help master\'s students navigate their career at UChicago and beyond.
  • Facilitate treks, workshops, career conversations, and other professional opportunities appropriate for master\'s students.
  • Build knowledge of career paths in academia, industry, nonprofits, and government.
  • Send career newsletters and other communications that inform students of relevant opportunities.
  • Serve as a liaison between UChicagoGRAD and various master\'s programs, developing relationships campus partners.
  • Collaborate with employer relations specialists and engage with employers on behalf of students.
  • Contribute to large-scale events run by UChicagoGRAD and campus partners
  • Follow up with students and graduate alumni to track progress and career outcomes.
  • Conducts mock interviews, reviews resumes and cover letters, and coordinates other interview related programming in both individual and group settings.
  • Develops original content for career related publications and assists with the editing and distribution of Career Services communications materials.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master\'s degree in student affairs or a relevant academic discipline.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in MS PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with some of the academic, industry, nonprofit, and government career options that are common for master\'s students.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and career services management tools.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

  • Excellent colla orator with experience working in a team environment.
