Mechanical Design Engineer – Power Transformers

A Snapshot of Your Day

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for preparing mechanical design of Power transformers as well as achieve design innovations and the optimization of the end products in compliance to Siemens Energy design rules, quality standards, cost position and time schedule. Candidate will be responsible for mechanical design and re-design of active part as well of outside design and re-design details of power transformers at Siemens Energy Power Transformers Repair Centre at Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Preparing customer documentation like general outline, shipping/transport, valve schedule, etc. and perform detailed mechanical design, development and analysis of the core, clamping, leads, winding assembly, tank and externals of transformers and its sub-assemblies & components.

  • Use 2D and 3D CAD software to model assemblies and individual parts and generate engineering drawings and bills of material.

  • Prepare specifications and order components and materials related to Mechanical Design.

  • Understand customer specifications, project requirements, guaranteed technical particulars, prepare design review documents, technical reports, and justifications for the customers.

  • Collaborate with other departments like sales, electrical design, manufacturing, Quality, testing & service departments on technical topics related to mechanical design.

  • Collaborate with other Siemens Energy transformer factories for further product enhancements.

  • Effectively communicate among multi-functional teams and participate in various internal and external technical forums.

  • Extend support for the development of global design rules & R&D efforts on the need basis.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering

  • Five or more years of working experience as a mechanical design engineer in the field of Power Transformers. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.

  • Strong conceptual knowledge and working experience of mechanical designing of transformers.

  • Experience of performing mechanical design of transformers for at least 5 years eg. core clamping/leads/tank/cooling etc.

  • Experienced user of 3D CAD software (e.g. CREO/ProEngineer/Inventor), PDM software (e.g. PDM Link/Teamcenter), 2D CAD (e.g. AUTOCAD) and software tools to create Bill of materials (e.g. SAP)

  • Able to understand mechanical simulations like structural, seismic, CFD (e.g. ANSYS, CREO simulate)

  • Familiar with the American & international standards (eg. IEEE, ANSI, IEC) related to transformers, transformer components, and materials.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English is necessary.

  • Self-motivated to produce high quality results within the time allocated, with limited supervision with good experience of working with Global Engineering teams in project execution

  • Effective co-ordination with manufacturing, suppliers, and customer

  • Preferred experience with SAP.

  • If not local the candidate must be willing to relocate to Charlotte-NC area.

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.

  • Technical understanding and creativity with an analytical competence and a solution-oriented mindset.
