Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics is looking for an experienced and motivated molecular biologist to lead and manage shared laboratory resources at the North Carolina Research Campus ( NCRC ). The ideal candidate will have a BS (MS preferred) in a biological science with at least five years of molecular biology lab experience. Candidates should have direct experience with sample preparation and sequencing workflows for lllumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms as well as quantitative molecular detection methods such as ddPCR and qPCR.

  • Manage the operations of the Bioinformatics and Genomics shared laboratory resources at the NCRC .

  • Provide expertise in the design and use of standard and state of the art molecular biology laboratory protocols.

  • Identify and apply improvements to procedures and protocols.

  • Train researchers, graduate students and department staff in the operation of specialized equipment and the performance of complex protocols.

  • Order materials and equipment and proper handling and reception of materials.

  • Provide oversight of shared equipment and spaces, including recommendations for space organization, service schedules, and equipment replacement.

  • Preparation and shipping of biological samples for external services, such as on dry ice or liquid nitrogen, in accordance with Shipping and Transportation protocol.

  • Work with Facilities and EHS on equipment certification, repair, and maintenance.

  • Dispose of chemical and biological waste in accordance with protocol.

  • Develop new services for the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics by maintaining awareness of emerging technologies and assisting researchers in development of funding proposals to obtain new instrumentation.

  • Assist researchers in developing statements of work and budgets for contracts that make use of departmental shared resources. Develop, track, and report metrics and quality control measures to evaluate the success and opportunities to improve departmental services.

  • Pursue laboratory certifications to improve competitiveness of departmental researchers for grants and contracts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience / Education:

  • 4 years degree with a minimum of five years related research laboratory experience.

  • Minimum of three years experience working with students in a research setting.

  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in application of high throughput sequencing and molecular detection technologies. Demonstrated experience in protocol design and optimization.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact with collaborators at all levels, including departmental and college leadership, researchers, graduate students, and scientific support staff.

  • Ability to prioritize and provide clear direction to team members. Demonstrated enthusiasm for challenging problems and innovative solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, motivation, and build trust with a diverse team.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within time and budget constraints to drive projects to completion. – Strong time management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.

  • Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Prior vaccination to rabies is a plus but not required.
