What you can expect in this role

As a Spectrum Intern, you’ll be essential to two teams — your respective department and your Intern peer group. Department and team-focused projects account for about 80% of your schedule. You’ll spend the other 20% on professional development sessions and networking activities, including the Kickoff Conference on May 28, webinars, community service, cross-functional project, and final presentations.

As an intern focused on Web Services development using Spring and Spring Boot, you will gain hands-on experience in building and maintaining robust and scalable web applications.

This position will provide you with the opportunity to work on real-world projects, learn from experienced developers, and contribute to the development of enterprise-level solutions.

Internship responsibilities may include:

  • Assist in Requirements Analysis: Collaborate with the development team to understand project requirements and objectives. Participate in meetings to gather and analyze user needs and translate them into technical specifications.

  • Web Service Development: Develop and maintain RESTful web services using Spring and Spring Boot frameworks. Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code following best practices and coding standards. Implement CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations and other functionalities as required.

  • Integration and Testing: Assist in integrating web services with front-end applications, databases, and third-party APIs. Write unit and integration tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the developed web services. Participate in code reviews and debugging sessions to identify and fix issues.

  • Database Management: Work with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and perform database operations using JPA/Hibernate. Assist in designing database schemas and writing efficient SQL queries. API Documentation: Create and maintain API documentation using tools like Swagger or OpenAPI. Ensure that documentation is clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date for developers and users.

  • Performance Optimization: Monitor and analyze the performance of web services and suggest improvements.Optimize code and database queries to enhance the performance and scalability of the applications.

  • Security Implementation: Assist in implementing security best practices to protect web services from common vulnerabilities (e.g., SQL injection, cross-site scripting). Work with authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g., OAuth, JWT) to secure API endpoints.

  • Continuous Learning and Collaboration: Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in Spring, Spring Boot, and related technologies. Collaborate with team members through pair programming, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Document development processes, code changes, and project progress. Generate reports and provide updates to supervisors and stakeholders.

Here’s what it takes to get started

Required qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited College or University graduating with a bachelor’s degree between December 2025 - May 2026

  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA or greater in current program

  • Ability to travel locally to Spectrum Intern development events and activities throughout the program

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without restrictions or need for Charter Sponsorship

Preferred qualifications

  • OOP

  • Java/Scala/Go

  • Javascript

  • Basic understanding of Java programming language and object-oriented programming principles

  • Familiarity with Spring Framework and Spring Boot is a plus

  • Knowledge of RESTful web services and API development

  • Experience with relational databases and SQL

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools

  • Ability to work in a team environment
