Job Purpose

From 2025 to 2028, the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture will commemorate 160 years of Black Education. With support from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the Avery Research Center will process, digitize and make accessible the history of the formation of the Avery Research Center, its early operational history, and the impact of Avery graduates on the greater Charleston community. These records include the unprocessed institutional records of the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture (AIAAHC), the Avery Research Center (ARC), and papers of Averyites (alumni of the secondary school and teacher training institute). These records illuminate how the education and support Averyites received while enrolled at Avery empowered them to achieve their goals and instilled in them a sense of social responsibility to improve the lives of others in their community.

The Avery Research Center is seeking to hire a project director for a full-time in-person position for the Avery and Liberatory Literacies grant. This position will supervise the work of all grant consultants and staff, work under the general supervision grant Co-Principal Investigators and collaborate with other College of Charleston Libraries staff.
