Roper St. Francis Manager Sterile Processing - Mt Pleasant Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina

Job Summary:

Manages the Sterile Processing Department consistent with the mission of Perioperative Services. This position has direct supervision and responsibility for activities of the department 24/7 in every aspect and all areas of Sterile Processing. Effectively directs and monitors Supervisors, Shift Leaders, SPD Techs I and II, Lead SPD Techs, and Scrub Techs to consistently meet departmental goals to provide sterile instruments and supplies in an efficient, accurate and professional manner. Monitors decontamination, equipment cleaning, sterilization, instrument assembly and case cart picking. Monitors for proper function of sterilization equipment and validates sterilization records and biological testing. Coordinates all case cart activities to support the case cart system. Communicates routinely with leadership in areas serviced and troubleshoots daily activity and cases changes within the OR to provide efficient and quality customer service. This position must plan, evaluate and prioritize workflow without specific instructions; assign work; and give specific instructions based on policy/procedure, OR activity, patient census and direction from department director. Works closely with physicians and other departments, including scheduling, material management, and infection prevention.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidate must meet one of the qualifications:

  1. A Bachelor�s degree from an accredited college/university in Business or a healthcare related field and a minimum of five years of work experience in Sterile Processing or Surgical Services.

If not already certified, the following are required within two years of employment:

• Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from IAHCSMM or SPD Technician Certification (CSPDT) from CBSPD; and

• Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) from IAHCSMM or Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) from CBSPD

OR

  1. A high school diploma or GED and nine years of work experience in Sterile Processing or Surgical Services, with at least 3 years in leadership capacity

The following certifications are required prior to hire:

• Certification Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from IAHCSMM or SPD Technician Certification (CSPT) from CBSPD

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledgeable and skilled in basic management, leadership principles, and interpersonal communications. Skilled in developing and implementing unit goals for a one or two-year period, consistent with those of the department and hospital. Able to complete work analysis and develop and implement a staffing plan that is attentive to the changing patient needs. Knowledgeable and engaged in the development of cleaning and sterilization standards, protocols / guidelines for all areas in the health system. Able to direct daily operations through Team Managers and Shift Leaders. Able to prepare and control unit budgets, including operating, capital and revenue budgets. Able to counsel, coach employees and, if necessary, take appropriate disciplinary action. Must be able to communicate and collaborate with physicians and other disciplines/departments to maximize patient care throughput and outcomes in the procedural areas SPD supports. Knowledgeable to provide clinical guidance and assess employee competency. Knowledgeable to evaluate job performance of unit personnel and recommend adjustments in accordance with established policies and procedures. Able to evaluate SPD staff and procedural areas staff supported by SPD and Physician satisfaction. Able to develop action plans, implement and monitor effectiveness to improve satisfaction scores. Knowledgeable in providing regulatory responsibility for sterilization and High-Level Disinfection (HLD) for the health system. Capable of maintaining SPD IT systems/databases and coordinating with IS on projects involving technology in SPD. Able to lead or participate in special perioperative projects that lead to improvements for the health system. Other: Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience in teaching and consulting; flexibility and creativity in problem solving. Demonstrated competency in using project management and performance improvement methodology (PDSA, Lean, Six Sigma, etc.). Proven ability to work with and communicate with physicians, executives, nursing, allied health professionals, and staff. Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, practical learning skills and conflict management.
