Summary The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York's mission is to investigate, prosecute and deter violations of federal statutes, enforce and represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, uphold civil, constitutional and victims' rights, and foster partnerships with other federal, state and local government agencies and community groups. Responsibilities This Paralegal Specialist provides routine legal support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in a variety of recurring litigative activities in the Long Island Civil Division. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Paralegal Specialist support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York, located in Central Islip, New York, focusing in the areas of legal research; legal writing; preparation and management of evidence and discovery; and case support. Typical work assignments will include: Researching references such as agency manuals, directives, issuances, court reports, appellate records or commercial legal publications to locate appropriate data such as applicable precedents, legislative history, or commentaries which bear on particular legal issues. Drafting initial legal and administrative briefs, motions, oppositions to defense motions and correspondence for AUSA review. Preparing and organizing documentation or evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Participating in pre-trial witness conferences, noting any deficiencies in case materials and additional issues or other matters requiring investigation prior to trial. Reviewing documents and other evidence, maintaining inventories of materials, and preparing outlines of substance of documents/materials. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-09 level, you must possess: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) the duties listed below: Gathering facts using the basic application of a body of law, regulations, precedents, and/or practices to analyze one or more recurring types of legal actions; Researching legal reference sources such as directives and policies, commercial legal publications and automated legal research systems sufficient to locate data; Analyzing issues of fact or issues of law to draft routine legal documents, briefs, or motions. OR master's degree or equivalent graduate degree; or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
