Actalent Mechanical Engineer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Job Title: Mechanical EngineerJob Description

Responsible for engineering and project administration activities related to specific circuit breaker product families. Perform engineering analyses, including thermal, electromagnetic, dynamic, and structural, using experience applying basic engineering principles. Ensure compliance with specific ratings, product specifications, and standards requirements. Participate in cross-functional teams with Manufacturing, Quality, Marketing, and Procurement functions. Perform methodical problem solving to assist in product line production. Support design activities, such as brainstorming, database management and development, design/peer reviews, and general analysis, including tolerance analysis, using experience with basic machine design. Ensure products meet requirements for Design for Manufacturing (DFM). Assist in root cause analysis by way of the 5 Why and Ishikawa processes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering and project administration activities for circuit breaker product families.

  • Perform thermal, electromagnetic, dynamic, and structural engineering analyses.

  • Ensure compliance with ratings, product specifications, and standards.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, Marketing, and Procurement.

  • Solve production-related problems methodically.

  • Support design activities including brainstorming, database management, design reviews, and tolerance analysis.

  • Ensure products are designed for manufacturing (DFM).

  • Assist in root cause analysis using the 5 Why and Ishikawa processes.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering-related field (electrical, mechanical, industrial).

  • Minimum of 5 years in a high production manufacturing environment.

  • Proficient in Design for Manufacturing (DFM).

  • Experience with Bill of Material (BOM) creation, modification, and documentation.

  • Strong understanding of basic engineering principles and machine design.

  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of FMEA, GD&T, FEA, and other mechanical engineering analysis tools.

  • Experience with continuous improvement processes.

  • Familiarity with root cause analysis tools such as Ishikawa and 5 Why.

Work Environment

This role will be onsite in Cedar Rapids, supporting product development. Travel is required 10% of the time.
