Position Summary

The Department of Engineering and Technology at Southern Utah University (SUU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or non-tenure-track Lecturer or Assistant Professor (NTT) faculty position within the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. This is a full-time faculty position to begin August 2025 and is open to candidates with either (a) a Bachelor's or Master's degree (for a non-tenure-track appointment) or (b) a Ph.D. (for a tenure-track appointment) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related field. The position will be at the SUU campus in Cedar City, Utah. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment and ability to teach at the undergraduate level. Position includes benefits that may include relocation expenses to hired candidates for on-site employment.

Essential Functions

• Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate engineering technology courses, use of effective teaching strategies, curriculum development, and mentorship of students. Specifically in this position, the successful candidate will manage student lab courses related to manufacturing/machining and manage the machine shop and related equipment. Additional responsibilities include scholarly activity (for a tenure-track appointment), active participation on service committees, and other duties as needed to support a robust and dynamic environment for student learning. Experience with accreditation is a plus.

• SUU Faculty are expected to provide quality educational experiences for major and non-major students taking their classes and to maintain a student-centered learning environment. Non-tenure-track faculty teach 30 credit hours per year (4-5 courses per semester), and tenure-track faculty teach 24 credit hours per year (3-4 courses per semester). This position includes a reduced teaching load equivalent to three (3) credits each semester for Machining Lab management and maintenance responsibilities (resulting in 24 teaching credits annually for a non-tenure-track or 18 for a tenure-track appointment). Faculty are generally expected to teach in a face-to-face format, but limited opportunities may exist for hybrid or online teaching modalities.

• Although Southern Utah University is primarily a teaching institution, tenure-track faculty have an expectation to engage collaboratively with students and/or peers on scholarly activity that results in peer-reviewed publications. No such expectation exists for non-tenure-track faculty.

• Faculty actively participate and collaborate with the department to enhance and maintain a robust Mechanical Engineering Technology curriculum based on continual program evaluation from internal review, industry advisory board feedback, student feedback, and accreditation review input. Faculty will be expected to participate fully in accreditation review and program improvement activities.

• All faculty must complete service activities within the department, college, and university.

• Experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) software (such as NX, Inventor, SolidWorks) and computer-aided manufacturing software (such as MasterCA and/or SolidCAM).

• Commitment and ability to deliver quality instruction for entry-level and upper-level engineering technology courses (such as computer-aided design [CAD], computer-aided manufacturing [CAM], Fluid Power, Mechatronics, and Robotics).

• Commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate students as evidenced by the applicant's teaching statement.

• An ability to manage technology and engineering labs by building lab experiments, maintaining lab equipment and consumable supplies, implementing safety protocols, and supervising student lab assistants.

• Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related field (degree determines whether appointment is non-tenure-track or tenure-track).

• Note: ABD applicants may be considered for tenure-track appointment if expected degree completion is within one year of the anticipated start date.

• Evidence of research/scholarly activity for tenure-track applicants.
