Douglas County Government Veteran Service Officer in Castle Rock, Colorado

Advises and assists veterans, dependents, and survivors concerning the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits resulting from service in the United States Armed Forces. Provides technical and administrative support for the Veteran Services program by processing claims, maintaining records, and providing technical information and referrals regarding veteran's benefits and related programs and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)

Interviews, advises, and assists veterans and/or dependents to determine nature of requested benefits. Provides general information about veteran benefits and explains forms needed to apply for benefits such as service-connected disability death benefits, insurance, pension, educational benefits, and other matters. Gathers and verifies information on veterans, deceased veterans, active-duty personnel, and dependents regarding potential benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Prepares all necessary forms required to apply for benefits; submits appropriate documents to the Department of Veterans Affairs Office or through a service organization such as Colorado Veterans Affairs. Follows up on claims to ensure claims are processed in a timely and efficient manner. Maintains current knowledge of the Department of Veterans Affairs' legislation, regulations, and precedents related to veteran benefits. Maintains file of appropriate reference materials. Maintains contacts in the veteran communities (in coordination with the Veterans Service Officer), such as VA Clinic, Vet Center, and service organizations, to facilitate and improve services offered by the Veteran Services Office. Works with the Colorado Division of Veteran Affairs to ensure final decisions regarding veteran benefits are entered and updated in the appropriate databases. Promotes the benefits of using the County Veteran Services in the local veteran community. May perform outreach activities as needed to inform the veteran community of available VA benefits. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of experience in performance of similar duties is required. Volunteer experience may be considered. A combination of education and experience may be considered. The incumbent shall have served in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Space Force. The applicant must provide proof of service and have an honorable discharge.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

Certification by Colorado Division of Veteran Affairs within one year of service. Accreditation by the National Association of County of Veterans Service Officers to present claims to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs within one year of service. The position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.
