ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES This position performs responsible unskilled work maintaining the appearance of solid waste container sites through essential functions such as: operates the compactor; explains the recycling program; inspects all loads of incoming waste and assists the public in separation of materials for proper placement, removes contaminants from recycling containers; ensures that patrons are residents of Moore County; answers solid waste related questions; stacks and moves materials to keep the site neat; maintains simple records of site activities; performs light maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and grounds (including, but not limited to: greasing equipment, cleaning underneath when the box is changed, periodic cleaning of signage, and clearing area of stray materials; performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS Some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned Working knowledge of policies regarding collection and sorting procedures of various solid waste and recycling materials Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions Ability to stand for long periods of time Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with associates and the general public Ability to interpret and apply policies on waste disposal in various containers and methods of recycling Ability to work a rotating shift Ability to demonstrate sound judgement, integrity, resourcefulness, accuracy, thoroughness, and the physical condition commensurate with the demand of the position

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Completion of the tenth grade and one (1) year of work experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
