EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED. Over five years of relevant experience, to
include experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered
or certified contractor, or construction superintendent, as related to the position.
SUMMARY
To assist citizens, contractors and designers in the development of property and structures
consistent with values, objectives, policies and codes of the City of Cape Canaveral.
Under the general supervision of the Building Official, the Deputy Building Official plays a crucial
role in the Building Department, overseeing management, supervision, and technical
administrative tasks. This position involves collaborating in the development, prioritization, and
achievement of departmental goals and policies, ensuring alignment with state technical codes
The Deputy Building Official provides inspection and plans examiner duties as well as guidance
and oversight of inspectors and plans examiners, facilitating plan review, permit issuance,
inspections, and legal proceedings against code violators. Additionally, the Deputy Building
Official may be tasked to represent the department before governmental and professional
agencies and the general public. In conjunction with the Building Official, the Deputy assists in
budget management for fiscal and personnel accountability, as well as setting goals to maintain
service levels within the department.
The position requires strong knowledge of technical codes, local (zoning) codes and property
maintenance, codes, as well as building construction safety rules, materials, and equipment.
During the Building Official's absence, the Deputy assumes the Building Official's administrative
duties, ensuring continuity of operations. Furthermore, the role may involve responding to manmade or natural disasters to support recovery efforts.
Reporting directly to the Building Official,
this position plays a vital role in upholding regulatory compliance, promoting public safety, and
facilitating community development in alignment with the values, objectives, policies, and codes
of the City of Cape Canaveral.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Building Official in carrying out assignments related to development of property
and enforcement of City Codes, including building, zoning, licensing, housing and
property maintenance codes.
Act as Building Official in their absence.
Review plans and specifications for proposed construction projects for compliance with
City Building and Zoning Codes.
Coordinate commercial and residential projects throughout the plan review process and
monitor progress of various construction projects.
Provide assistance to property owners, developers, builders, architects, engineers and
other customers seeking information on planning, building or zoning matters.
Inspect buildings and properties to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable
codes; inspect dwellings for Housing Code violations.
Issue verbal and written violations, stop work orders and citations.
Perform inspections; maintain accurate daily records of inspections performed.
Knowledge of City Building, Housing, Property Maintenance and Zoning Codes.
Knowledge of building construction, safety rules, materials and equipment.
Provide supervisory responsibilities at the direction of the Building Official - As directed,provides strong leade
