SUMMARY: The Press Weld Assistant supports the Press Weld Operator by performing a variety of tasks that ensure the efficient operation of the press welding process. This role is responsible for loading and handling materials, effectively communicating order details and specifications to the operator, and using the company's ERP system, EPICOR, to properly transact work product steps and account for production time. The assistant helps set up, run, and monitor the machines, performs preventative maintenance, and ensures that grating meets specified requirements.  Living the Ohio Gratings values, the assistant must work well within a team, taking direction from the Press Weld Operator and plant leadership, while also being able to communicate effectively and back up the operator when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in a fast-paced, high-speed environment, following all operating procedures, work instructions, and adhering to safe work practices in a continuous improvement-focused environment.
  • Assist in the setup of equipment, press adjustments, die settings, materials used, proper spacing requirements, and necessary programming to ensure the safe operation of the press welder and overall product quality.
  • Use the ERP system, EPICOR, to transact work product steps, manage inventory, and accurately account for production time.
  • Maintain regular communication with the press weld team and material handlers.
  • This position also involves making necessary adjustments and tool changes to maintain quality standards and supporting the operator as needed.
  • Following all of Ohio Gratings safety rules and regulations. 
  • Identify and escalate non-conformances while maintaining a focus on minimizing scrap and rework operations.
  • Assist with loading components and unloading grating panels or other materials as needed to keep teams on track to meet or exceed productivity expectations.
  • Participate in machine upkeep, health, and reliability through daily and continual preventative maintenance activities.
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities to improve key performance indicators.
  • Participate in cross-training in different areas within the organization to gain a deeper understanding of the Ohio Gratings product line and advance your career. This may include learning new skills such as welding or material handling if instructed by management.
  • Keep personal and common work areas clean and organized.
  • Perform other duties and cross-train as assigned by supervision.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, AND PROFICIENCIES:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Able to use and operate safely various hand and power tools.

Able to use and operate safely overhead cranes and forklifts.

Able to read and understand both metric and standard tape measures.

Able to read and interpret documents such as travelers, procedures, and instructions.

Able to perform mathematical operations of whole numbers and fractions in both standard and metric units.

Must be a driven team player who takes initiative to learn and grow; takes pride in group dynamics and motivating others; possesses both written and verbal communication skills.

Prior manufacturing experience with a steel or aluminum manufacturer is preferred.

Experience with overhead cranes and forklifts is preferred.

Ability to follow documented instructions and procedures.
