Position Title Associate Director of Budget and Planning

Primary Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Finance, the Associate Director of Budget and Planning manages the preparation of operating, capital, and compensation budgets. The Associate Director monitors and reports budget activity in the context of university policies, programs, and objectives. Beyond the primary maintenance of budgets, the Associate Director conducts financial analysis, due diligence, and oversight related to general planning and specific projects. The Associate Director is an integral member of the Decision, Analysis, and Planning Support ( DAPS ) team who fosters effective working partnerships across the University while carrying out job responsibilities with impeccable integrity consistent with the best interests of the University.

Hybrid Work Statement

This position is based on our campus in Canton, N.Y., and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with work-from-home flexibility.

Job Responsibilities

Budget Development and Policy Management:

Manages the annual operating and capital budget preparation cycle. Designs and maintains annual budget training, performs new budget manager orientation, coordinates, and conducts senior level budget meetings, and compiles budget requests. Writes, maintains, and communicates budget policies and procedures to campus leadership and constituents.

Operating and Capital Budget Management:

Tracks operational and capital budgets to ensure spending compliance of departments. Reports budget performance directly to senior leadership. Maintains all systems supporting operating and capital budgeting including Colleague, Self-Service, and Excel based systems.

Planning and Analysis:

Performs analysis of year-end financial results to inform decision making at the Senior Staff level. Produce ad hoc analysis as needed.

Reporting:

Prepares ad hoc reporting on an as needed basis for senior leadership. Coordinates with budget managers and provides adequate and timely reporting to assist in decision making. Completes selected questionnaires and surveys from external organizations and assures submissions are accurate and timely.

Position Management:

Assists Senior Staff in the job posting process and management of the University Position budget.

Miscellaneous:

Serves on an array of university committees as a representative of the Finance department. Provides support to the accounting office on an as needed basis. Assists with insurance renewals as needed. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field is required. This position requires at least 3 years of experience in finance or accounting, preferably in a higher education or non-profit environment. Proven experience with financial systems and computer applications is required.

  • Must possess excellent analytical skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to develop new problem-solving strategies when necessary. Requires strong written and oral communications skills with proven ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the University. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, a high level of accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines are required.

  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required. Experience with Microsoft Access and Ellucian’s Colleague finance system is preferred.

  • An equivalent combination of education and documented experience and training in the areas identified will be considered. A graduate degree in a related field may also be considered in place of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

Understanding and demonstrated working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ) and Financial Accounting Standards Board ( FASB ) pronouncements is preferred.

Salary Salary range $73,000 - $85,000 annually.
