Position Description

The Department of Mathematics at Harvard University seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer on Mathematics. The position is for five years and renewable contingent upon review and approval of the divisional/ SEAS dean. The appointment is expected to begin on January 1, 2026.

Ordinarily, Senior Lecturers are exceptional teachers who have taught within the tenured associate or full professor ranks at a university or peer undergraduate institution, with a commensurate scholarly record. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching three undergraduate mathematics courses per academic year. One of these three courses may involve coordinating a multi-sectioned course whose audience consists predominately of non-mathematics majors. The Senior Lecturer will also carry some administrative and advising duties, as required by the Department.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate in Mathematics or related discipline required by the time the appointment begins.

Additional Qualifications

Applicants must have a strong background in advanced mathematics and a sophisticated understanding of undergraduate teaching, learning, and curricular issues generally. Considerable experience teaching mathematics at the undergraduate level is essential and must meet one of the following sets of criteria. Ordinarily, they have either:

  • Demonstrated that they are exceptional teachers and have taught within the tenured associate or full professor ranks at a university or peer undergraduate institution, with a commensurate scholarly record. Or,

  • Demonstrated a record of national leadership in innovation in pedagogy, with outstanding promise of continuing contribution, and in addition are exceptional teachers.

Teaching and advising materials (e.g., teaching chart listing courses taught in reverse chronological order [please indicate which, if any, courses were taught remotely, whether partially or in full, due to the COVID -19 pandemic]; representative syllabi; teaching evaluations; list of undergraduate students for whom the candidate has primary advising responsibility).

  5. Research statement or statement expanding on demonstrated record of national leadership in innovation in pedagogy.

  6. Service statement describing efforts to strengthen academic communities (e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies).

  7. Names and contact information of 3-5 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
