Position Description

The Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology ( OHPE ) is dedicated to training public health dentists to lead interdisciplinary teams in conducting investigations on the risk factors for oral disease and their relation to systemic disease; use research methods to study the health outcomes of dental services; and become leaders in national and global oral health. The department houses five advanced graduate programs in public health, geriatrics, rural health, and general dentistry. Opportunities for collaboration include numerous centers and institutes across the university as well as a global network of faculty and professionals in global and public health. HSDM has grown to become a leader in global health and workforce development. Example successes include the launch of the first dental school in Rwanda, reforming dental training in Vietnam, and implementing novel community health worker training programs for the World Health Organization.

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology ( OHPE ). This is a full-time faculty appointment with a focus in global health. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. HSDM offers a unique interdisciplinary environment for teaching, research, service, and clinical activity, central to our mission at HSDM and the University. The incumbent may also have the opportunity to participate in clinical practice extramurally, dependent on interest and availability.

The successful candidate will serve as HSDM’s Global Health Discipline Director and will direct HSDM’s integrated, interdisciplinary, competency-based global health program. The program consists of didactic coursework, research and scholarship opportunities worldwide, and experiential learning in clinical and community settings locally and globally. As part of OHPE offerings, global health content is integrated and assessed in multiple core longitudinal predoctoral and advanced graduate courses, in coordination with other departments and disciplines within HSDM . The Global Health Discipline also offers additional opportunities for HSDM students who wish to pursue deeper learning experiences through elective courses and concentrations, research, and field-based learning. The incumbent should be prepared to sustain and support the strategic growth of global health education and research programs at HSDM through engagement with a broad network of partners and collaborators.

Additional responsibilities may include the following:

  • Developing and directing individual courses, both core and elective

  • Teaching in other core HSDM courses

  • Directing the predoctoral Global and Community Health honors track and experiential learning programs

  • Overseeing global health components of formative and summative assessments including objective structured clinical exams, clinical case presentations, and other integrated exams

  • Participation on global health committees at HSDM , Harvard Medical School, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences

  • Global health research and scholarly project mentorship for predoctoral and advanced graduate students

  • Supporting school-wide research events and developing a global health research portfolio

  • Cultivating collaborative relationships with academic partners worldwide and leading global health research and program activities

Full-time appointment consists of four days for research and/or other administrative activity, plus up to 1 day for clinical practice, continuing education (CE) activities, and/or additional research activities.

Basic Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a DMD or DDS (or equivalent) degree and will bring expertise in global health, including the social determinants of health, health policy, workforce and health systems, and global disease burden.

Additional Qualifications

Additional training in global health, including a supplemental degree, degree concentration, certificate, or fellowship; experience in teaching and mentoring diverse students, experience lecturing and developing courses or course materials, and an overall understanding of global health curricula in higher education; experience in research, grant writing, scholarship, and global health-related programs.
