JOB TITLE: Assistant Laboratory Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager

SUMMARY: The role of Assistant Laboratory Manager (ALM) assists the Laboratory Manager in the responsibility for all day-to-day laboratory operations at a local divisional office or offices. This role must represent the policies, ethics, and culture of the company in a leadership role.

The ALM understudies the Laboratory Manager through closely monitoring laboratory testing and turn-around time as well as providing lab-related customer service, quality tasks and troubleshooting as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.

This person in this position will have the capabilities and authority to perform and/or offer training to laboratory staff on standard test methods, as well as any calibration, verification, and maintenance procedures for all laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be designated.

  • Demonstrate and require ethics at all times.

  • Champion health and safety in the laboratory and facility.

  • Daily review of laboratory staff to ensure adequate resources to perform all aspects of work required.

  • Monitoring laboratory training.

  • Instrument calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Provide employee motivation and champions quality management system,

  • Maintain an “open door policy” and communicates with lab staff and management to promote empowerment and accountability.

  • Obtain and maintain an in-depth knowledge of local market requirements.

  • Foster customer confidence in Bureau Veritas laboratory work.

  • Review local laboratory operations for all aspects of the continuous improvement process.

  • Conduct root cause investigations when needed.

  • Compile and analyze test information to determine operating efficiency of processes and equipment and to diagnose problems and malfunctions.

  • Recommend measures to improve testing procedures, use of equipment, and needs for new equipment. Conduct research to develop custom procedures as needed, working in conjunction with senior lab management.

  • Ensure laboratory practices meet or exceed company policy and industry standards.

  • May on occasion be required to perform the duties of the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Technicians.

  • Establish or adjust work schedules to meet testing requirements and control costs.

  • Maintain time, training, calibration, QC and testing records.

  • Other duties as may be assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide guidance to Laboratory Supervisor(s) (if applicable) and Laboratory Technicians.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university or Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphical data.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Above average “people skills”

Excellent communication skills

Computer literate (MS Office), equipment related software, email etc.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid driver’s license required.
