Job Title:Peer Recovery Specialist

Home Office:Cairo, IL

Area of Focus:Community Collaboration

Program(s):Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC). ROSC is a coordinated network of community-based activities, resources, and supports that are person-centered and build on the strengths and resiliencies of individuals, families, and communities to achieve recovery and improved health, wellness, and quality of life for those with or at risk of substance use disorders.

Immediate Supervisor:Program Coordinator

Peer Recovery Specialist Hours of Work:Full-time 40 hours/week

Peer Recovery Specialist Skills & Knowledge: Need to be willing to self-identify as a current or former recipient of substance use or co-occurring services. Knowledge of case management processes, regional resource/service systems, community engagement, word processing, and basic computer skills is required. Excellent written and oral communication is required, teaching basic life skills and problem-solving strategies.

Peer Recovery Specialist Special Requirements: Maintains a valid drivers license and vehicle liability insurance; maintain First Aid & CPR certification; after-hours crisis response rotation if MHP eligible; must complete required registry clearances and criminal fingerprint background checks; travels to off-site services; schedules evening / or weekend hours as necessary.

Peer Recovery Specialist job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates and assists in planning and facilitation of designated ROSC council.
  • Plans and participates in ROSC activities/events focused on prevention, recovery, and community education about substance use, and other outreach opportunities as required.
  • Works within the local community to develop, recruit, and maintain a Recovery Committee, focused on bringing together individuals in recovery throughout the county(ies) of focus for the purpose of uniting recovery resources with community need, offering peer support and opportunities for socialization and recreation, and collaborating with and providing feedback to ROSC councils in the development of prevention and recovery activities/events; encourages members of the committee to engage in activities independent of the Agency.
  • Models personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hope by sharing personal recovery experiences and developing authentic peer-to-peer relationships within the parameters of professional boundaries.
  • Assist consumers in overcoming any barriers to meeting recovery goals through the provision of general support, case management services, assertive outreach, and teaching of life-management, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Engages and assist in the development of the individual treatment plan collaboratively with consumers and providers by defining recovery and health management goals, specific outcomes and time frames.
  • Work with consumers one-on-one and in groups to provide recovery training, outreach, and support to individuals who are struggling with SUD and/or in the process of achieving or attempting to maintain their recovery from SUD.
  • Keeps the treatment team informed about consumers strengths, accomplishments, and obstacles in relation to their recovery goals.
  • Arrange for or directly provide transportation to recovery and wellness services appointments.
