The Weights & Measures Director organizes, directs and manages all functions of the Weights & Measures Division to ensure all Minnesotans can be assured of accuracy of transaction based on weight, measure or count, accurately labeled commodities, quality petroleum products, and precision metrological service.

The Director will:

  • Provide daily direction to (1) one Deputy Director who manages the fuel quality and metrology lab and staff, (2) two Assistant Directors who manage (22) twenty-two field inspectors and associated programs, and (2) two Office Administrative Staff.

  • Develop and monitor policies and procedures, develop and execute strategy, manage budgets, and advise senior agency staff on Weights & Measures related topics.

  • Work with other state agencies, industry, and stakeholders to achieve Commerce goals of protecting consumers and industry oversight.

  • Participate in the National Conference on Weights & Measures, and the Central Weights & Measures Association to help develop national standards, promote uniformity, and ensure fairness in the marketplace.

Minimum Qualifications

(5) Five years of supervisory or management experience.

  • A bachelor's degree can substitute for one (1) year of experience, an advanced degree can substitute for (18) eighteen months of experience.

Candidates who meet the above minimum qualifications must also meet the following:

  • (4) Four years of experience in legal metrology or fuel quality either at a government agency; OR an organization that offers metrological services for commercial devices; OR an organization which uses, manufactures, or sells weighing or measuring devices.

  • Examples of legal metrology include but are not limited to field work as PIS agent or W&M inspector, Mass and/or volume calibrations.

  • Experience in an organization that interprets and enforces regulations through inspection, calibrations and performance-based testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory or management experience in an organization which is subject to Minnesota Statute Chapter 239 and Minnesota Rules Chapter 7601.

  • Experience with standards setting organization like the NCWM or ASTM.

  • Experience in drafting and advancing proposal through a legislative process or conducting rulemaking.

  • Experience with IndySoft, WinWam or a Laboratory Information Management System software.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer.
