Overview
The Public Health Supervisor oversees the planning and implementation of health promotion and chronic disease prevention efforts in the Department of Health\'s Burlington District Office, which serves Chittenden County. Through policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) strategies, the position works to improve population health and equity by leading a dynamic team of public health professionals in four programmatic areas: family and child health, school health, worksite wellness, and healthy communities. Each programmatic area uses the public health 3.0 model of building strong and sustainable community partnerships to improve the community\'s social determinants of health across the life course, including economic stability, education access and quality, healthcare access and care, social and community context, and neighborhood and built environment. Therefore, extensive community engagement and relationship building with various community decision-makers is required, including partners within family and child health institutions (e.g., childcare facilities, pediatric providers, OB/GYN providers), schools (e.g., school administrators, school boards, school nurses), worksites (e.g., local business owners), and neighborhoods (e.g., elected officials, town and regional planning departments).
Skills needed for the position include:\ - Supervising and managing a diverse workforce of public health professionals (including both public health nurses and public health specialists) on their performance and professional development\ - Communicating effectively with a team and facilitating group meetings\ - Building relationships with community partners from various sectors to address complex social issues that impact health\ - Assessing and identifying the needs of community partners and the populations they serve\ - Designing data-driven and evidence-based public health approaches which meet the needs of various communities and populations\ - Strategically planning and overseeing the implementation of equity-focused preventative (e.g., primordial, primary, secondary) public health programs\ - Evaluating the effectiveness of implemented public health programs
The Public Health Supervisor reports to the Burlington District Office\'s Public Health Services District Director and is a key member of the office\'s leadership team. As part of the Vermont Department of Health, the Burlington District Office is the largest of 12 local health offices in Vermont.
