Burlington High School English Department Chair - 2024 Under the direction and supervision of the school principal, the department chairperson provides instructional leadership and assistance to all teachers in their department. They support the ongoing development and effective implementation of a standards-based departmental curriculum aligned with state and local learning objectives. Fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment within the department, the chairperson builds collective responsibility for the learning and thriving of all students. Responsibilities: Coordinate and supervise curriculum development within the department. Ensure the scope and sequence and curriculum documents reflect state standards and district/school learning objectives. Ensure the curriculum continuum supports students in meeting the expectations outlined in the BPS Portrait of a Graduate. Ensure the curriculum is inclusive and reflects the learning needs of BHS students. Create and/or facilitate the creation of curricular resources (e.g., sample unit plans, sample lesson plans, supplemental text resources, etc.) to support teachers and students as needed. Assist in the interview process and recommend to the Principal candidates for teaching positions in the department conduct regularly scheduled department meetings to ensure departmental members' professional growth and continuous curricular improvement that improves student achievement Visit department members’ classrooms to observe the curriculum's impact and review instruction delivery; provide feedback and secure resources to support teacher growth. Facilitate the development and use of grade-level and course-specific common assessments to determine instructional strategies that will most effectively meet the needs of all students and ensure all students are held to high expectations. Serve as the primary evaluator for department members; complete the teacher evaluation process for all department members in accordance with the BPS contract. Plan and facilitate regular department meetings. Plan and facilitate department-based professional development as needed Support department members in using common planning time to progress department-based goals. Review department practices regularly to ensure they support the learning and growth of all students, align with school and district goals, and reflect evidence-based best practices. Use relevant data to inform department-based decisions that promote student achievement and maintain high learning standards for all students; facilitate department discussions of data for curricular or instructional modification. Ensure department members offer effective enrichment and extra help opportunities during flex block sessions. Develop and implement departmental programming that promotes a passion for the subject area and acknowledges student growth and achievement. Facilitate hiring new department members as needed; orient new teachers and provide ongoing support, including time for new teachers to meet with mentors and engage in peer observations. Assist the Principal in developing and implementing the annual department budget by Orderung and maintain supplies and equipment as needed throughout the year within the approved budget's constraints; maintain accurate inventories of books, equipment, and supplies within the department; ensure the efficient use of resources, curricular materials, and learning spaces. Review and update the department-specific section of the Program of Studies annually. Represent the department in the BHS Instructional Leadership Team. Such work may include, but is not limited to: contributing to whole-school policy-making and strategic planning as site administration requires, ensuring these policies are authentically embedded in the department's work. collaborating with school- and district-based counterparts to ensure the vertical alignment of curriculum and instructional practices across grade levels. serving on school- and/or district-based committees as requested by site administrators, with the understanding that the request cannot exceed two committees per school year. Develop the department’s annual teaching schedules and course offerings to support student and faculty growth and submit them to the administration for approval Review course-level override requests and communicate with relevant parties to provide guidance and/or facilitate override processes, such as opt-out assessments. Collaborate with teachers, families, students, counselors, administrators, and other relevant BPS staff to address academic and social-emotional concerns regarding students as they arise. Support site-based administrators in ensuring all department teachers’ homerooms and classes have coverage as needed. Maintain a reduced teaching schedule—two to four classes, depending on the number of people in the department. Model effective, culturally and linguistically sustaining instructional practices. Remain current with educational literature, practices, and issues to support department teachers’ ongoing professional growth and the implementation of best practices in their classrooms. Job Requirements: BHS Department Chairpersons' daily and weekly work schedule needs ot be flexible for various school needs. Per the BPS Unit D Contract, BHS Department Chairpersons work an additional thirteen days of work (or 104 hours). Participation in required summer administrative council and ILT meetings is included in these days/hours. In addition to the events outside of school hours that Unit A members must attend (e.g., Back-to-School Night, Family-Teacher Conferences, Open House), chairpersons may be called on to plan for and attend other events such as curriculum nights or other relevant events throughout the year. Such events include but are not limited to grade 8 curriculum night; presentations to various BPS community groups, such as the SEPAC and ELPAC; and grade-level informational family/community meetings. *Chairpersons must acquire their supervisor/director license within twelve months of the start of their contract. Experience, Skills, & Licensure: 5+ years of experience in the high school classroom preferred Professional teaching license in the specified subject area SEI endorsement (teacher or administrator) Substantive experience teaching students at various levels Expert content knowledge and a demonstrated passion for the subject area Outstanding leadership skills Excellent organizational and presentation skills Demonstrated success at working collaboratively Effective conflict-resolution skills Start Date: August 26, 2024 Compensation: In accordance with the Burlington Educators' Association Unit D contract Burlington's student body represents a broad range of cultures and backgrounds.
