QUALIFICATIONS Requires the following (or equivalent qualifications):

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in school or mass transportation services

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in managing personnel, budgeting and scheduling

  • An applied science degree in business administration or related field

  • Possession of a valid Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger transport endorsement

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a school bus driver's permit issued annually by the Iowa Department of Education

    POSITION PURPOSE The School Transportation Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of student transportation, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely transportation services for students. This role involves managing a fleet of buses, supervising transportation staff, coordinating with school administrators, and maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations. SUPERVISION Supervises bus drivers, mechanics, and assigned support staff PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the school transportation department, including the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and related activities.

  • Develop, implement, and enforce transportation policies and procedures to ensure safety and compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Supervise and manage transportation staff, including bus drivers, aides, and mechanics, providing training, performance evaluations, and professional development.

  • Plan, schedule, and optimize bus routes to ensure efficiency, minimize delays, and meet the needs of students.

  • Oversee and manage student routing software.

  • Monitor the maintenance and repair of buses and other vehicles in the fleet, ensuring that all vehicles are in safe working condition and meet state inspection standards.

  • Advise the Superintendent on road conditions for decisions on school closings.

  • Collaborate with school principals, parents, and community members to address transportation-related concerns and resolve any issues or complaints.

  • Maintain accurate records of transportation operations, including route data, driver hours, and vehicle maintenance logs.

  • Ensure compliance with all transportation safety laws, including student behavior policies, special needs accommodations, and emergency response procedures.

  • Develop and manage the transportation budget, including forecasting, cost analysis, and ensuring cost-effective operations.

  • Coordinate transportation services for extracurricular activities, field trips, and athletic events.

  • Respond to transportation emergencies, accidents, or delays promptly, ensuring appropriate action is taken and proper reports are filed.

  • Participate in long-term planning for transportation improvements, including the assessment of new technologies, routes, and fleet management practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation laws and regulations.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, students, parents, and school officials.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Proficiency with transportation management software and basic office software (e.g., MS Office).

  • Ability to analyze data and make decisions based on safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
