St. Mary's School for the Deaf (the School or SMSD) is seeking a dynamic and experienced School Principal to lead our school community. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a passion for education and a commitment to student success. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of best practices in educational leadership and have a proven record of successfully implementing programs and initiatives that improve student outcomes.

School Principal Responsibilities & Duties:

Staff

  • Manage scheduling and attendance

  • Lead curriculum, supervision and mentorship of teachers and teacher assistants

  • Lead initiative on staff development for both technical and non-technical skills

  • Observe and evaluate effectiveness of teachers and teacher assistants Students

Students

  • Oversee the overall aspects of student programming and instruction

  • Manage student discipline as needed

  • Work closely with students and families to ensure children's best interests are met

Leadership/Strategic

  • Oversee that the educational programs of the school are conducted effectively in accordance with established rules, educational regulations, and IEP's

  • Attend meetings that relate to programming and instruction and convey appropriate information to faculty and staff

  • Provide support and guidance to teachers and other staff to ensure their success.

  • Lead various committees, including school accreditation committees

  • Establish policies and procedures to provide control and leadership in the event of a school crisis.

  • Manage outside agency investigations including NYS Justice Center, CPS, and police

  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff, and community stakeholders

  • Develop and lead a variety of special events throughout the year

Qualifications & Skills

  • Master's degree in Deaf Education from an accredited college or university

  • New York State certification for teaching

  • New York State certification for Administration/Principal, or the ability to obtain this credential within three years of hire date.At least five years of experience as a classroom teacher with students who are deaf or hard of hearing

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)

  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and decision-making abilities

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development

  • Knowledge of current educational trends and best practices
